Aroma is weak -- I have yet to sort out how Carlyle can make such huge, rich beers with so little aroma -- but persistent sniffing reveals vanilla, molasses, and chocolate. Flavor is a big complex burst of molasses, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and a slightly tart/sour that actually works quite well with the surprising abundance of sweetness. Quite honestly, the stout base almost gets lost in the whiskey character, and usually when that happens that means the final product is syrupy and overbearing, but it’s not so in this case. Finishes with a thick palate that is a bit flat. This is a truly interesting beer. I wish they would have let me take home a growler so I could ponder it some more.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 12, 2009 Black with a thick tan head. Whiskey aroma is rather striking with undertones of coffee, molasses and bittersweet cocoa. Smoke and rye bite to the flavor, which has a somewhat subdued whiskey character when compared with the aroma. Somewhat light-bodied, but extremely sticky on the palate - tons of chewy malts in this. Pretty tasty. Narnad (695), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 10, 2009 Pitch black in color with a very thick dark tan/brown head. Vanilla, whiskey, rye, lots of dark roast and chocolate round out the aromas. Flavor has a chocolate note at the start and transitions to a whiskey flavor with a very nice dose of rye in the middle followed by a light bitter roasted ending (light black patent). Very smooth brew, low carbonation and a mild density with it feeling a bit light at the tail end. Overall a very interesting brew with the mild malt sweetness and woody flavors melding well with the mild bitter roast, making it a good brew.
