Commercial Description:
Red ales were once common in Ireland but disappeared from there many years ago. American microbreweries have reinvented and reshaped the style, but the “soul of the Irish Red Ale is still, and always will be, Irish!” The newest Cottonwood brew has a deep ruby color reflecting the dominant caramel malt taste profile. “Irish” is brewed an extra two hours in the kettle which brings out the roasted malt taste, an almost a toasted overtone. A taste of this “Fine Irish Red Ale” and you will see why those leprechauns are always smiling.

Bottled as Cottonwood Irish Style Red Ale. Bad aroma, shady murky brown apperance, and sour malt taste.... not that good. Maybe this was a bad bottle, or maybe just a failure on the part of Carolina Beer’s marketing strategy. Before this, I couldn’t say I had ever had a "bad" Cottonwood, oh well....

Draught. Clear light copper color without any head. Metallic anbd subtle caramel aroma. Caramel and spicy hop flavor. Decent beer.

(Knoxville Brewers’ Jam). Pours red-copper with off-white head. The aroma is toast and caramel. The flavor is light honey, toasted malt, and barley with very subtle hoppiness. One of the better reds I’ve had lately.

Nice clear mahogany with a quickly fading head. Aroma of caramel and a touch of light smoke. Flavor has notes of toasted malt, caramel and some peat. Only moderately sweet, has a touch of bitterness. Medium body with spritzy carbonation. No lacing or head retention. Not bad, just very average.

Bottle from Peace St. Market, Raleigh, NC. Pours deep brown/ruby edged with aroma of malt, cabernet, some fruit. Tastes malty, red winey, with some hops in the finish. Sonewhat watery palate.

Draft at Carolina Ale House. Dark brown pour with aroma of malt, some cabernet and hops. Tastes malty with some hops, toffee, and cabernet in the finish.

One of the current house brews at Carolina Ale House. Deep amber pour with typical red ale aroma of malt, toffee, some cabernet. Tastes malty, with finishing hints of cabernet, toffee, and fruit.

Picked up a six of this stuff on sale after St. Patty’s day. It poured a nice medium, reddish-brown with a medium head. Very earthy aroma, mild hops, with an overall sweet-ish, malty flavor though. Kind of strange for an ale. Also, not particularly lively on the palate. In fact it finished a little watery. I’d say it was worth the sale price for the six.

Bottle. Pours red, with a very thin white head. Aroma is malty. Flavor is thin, but malty and there is little if any bitterness. Very average beer of this style.
Earlier Rating: 8/1/2003 Total Score: 2.8
Big white head, red amber color. Slightly malty, hoppy aroma. Off flavor--rotten taste. Ruins the finish of the beer.
