Commercial Description:
In the gold rush days of the 1800's, this original American beer style was created by brewing a lager beer without the benefit of refrigeration. Though the origin of the term "steam" is unknown, it may have been used to describe the sound made when tapping a keg of this well carbonated brew. This method of fermentation creates a hybrid beer with the depth and character of an ale and the crispness of a lager. In keeping with tradition, our beer has a malty palate, amber color, and contains the finest ale hops.

From notes 8/24/04: Pours a bright copper color with an ample fluffy light tan head. The head reduces to a thin cap in a short while. This one had the nicest lacing I have experienced with any Carolina Brewery beer. Aromas have plenty of hoppy bitterness to reel you in. Some "freshly homebrewed" character in the air as well with the malt portion. Flavors have the dicotomy of smooth rounded tones with the added spikes of bittering and yeast. Toasty malt plus bittering hops. Smooth ale notes plus lagering yeast kick. Dry as a bone finish. A nicely done style. I’d like to get a growler next time and do a side-by-side with Anchor to see how they compare.
