Commercial Description:
This brilliant red ale, brewed with caramel and pale malts, is a best seller at the Carolina Brewery. Using traditional brewing methods, the ale yeast provides a touch of fruit and works in tandem with the malt to make for a very drinkable ale. Kent Golding hops lend just enough bitterness and aroma to round out the flavor.

This poured a pale copper with a modest white head. Both the nose and taste consisted of a generic sweet malt with a touch of apples and sweet cherries. Thin bodied, it finishes on a faint, herbal bitter note. Passable... meaning, pass on it.

On Tap at The Cellar, Chapel Hill, NC. (2 doors down from Carolina Brewery.) Typical light ambered look with a nose that makes you sniff again. very faint. where are the malts? If an amber is gonna succeed its gotta bring the malts. This brew is lacking that. Certainly there are better choices at Carolina Brewery. I wanted to get a growler of the imperial stout, but they said that was the only one they didnt put in growlers, because...um...’they are high gravity’

From notes 5/5/03: A bright clear golden amber color. Patchy thin off-white head. Moderate lacing. Little aroma. What scents that could be detected were somewhat fruity. A rich roasted malt taste, sweet and bitter. A crispness to the taste, but nothing overly sweet. Well-balanced between the sweet malt and bitter hop profiles. The most popular Carolina Brewery selection according to my server today.

Rich, hoppy amber. Pretty good balance. Definitely one of the better brews there.

Clear amber color with a thin white head. Lots of malt in the aroma with hints of apple. Mostly a sweet malty beer with a hint of hop bite and a dry finish. Good example of the style but not exactly adventerous.

Crystal clear light copper color with smallish creamy white head. Aroma has honey and caramel notes, crisp. Flavor is malty, faint notes of hops in the flavor, with caramel, honey, wheat, smooth finish without much bitterness. Nothing special.

Had this on tap at the brewpub. Clear copper color with thin head. Caramel and hop aroma with same caramel flavor. Some distant hop bitterness and flavor. A decent beer.

Draught. Appears a stereotypical amber with a small white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is full of caramel with some nuttiness and mild hop aroma. Flavor is malty and dry with caramel/toffee apparent. Earthy English hops also come through but just moderately for some bitterness and flavor to balance. Body is on the thin side. I really don’t get any fruity ester profile from the yeast as the commercial description suggests. I think Carolina Brewery uses a very clean, highly attenuating American ale yeast so that is to be expected. Also, I think an amber need to be a bit sweeter and fuller bodied to be to style.
