Commercial Description:
This brilliant red ale, brewed with caramel and pale malts, is a best seller at the Carolina Brewery. Using traditional brewing methods, the ale yeast provides a touch of fruit and works in tandem with the malt to make for a very drinkable ale. Kent Golding hops lend just enough bitterness and aroma to round out the flavor.

From notes 5/5/03: A bright clear golden amber color. Patchy thin off-white head. Moderate lacing. Little aroma. What scents that could be detected were somewhat fruity. A rich roasted malt taste, sweet and bitter. A crispness to the taste, but nothing overly sweet. Well-balanced between the sweet malt and bitter hop profiles. The most popular Carolina Brewery selection according to my server today.

Tap at the brewery 2/2/08: Pours a transparent bright copper with a spotty-lacing froth of off-white head. Aroma of semi-sweet toasty caramel malt with some mild piny hop notes. Starts fairly full and semi-sweet with a touch of sticky caramel toffee malt flavor and a decent bitter balance toward a drier earthy bittersweet finish.

Sampled on draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear amber color with a thin head. Average head retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malts and nuts. Taste is nutty with caramel, grain and bitter leafy hops. Medium bodied.

This one won a Gold medal at the 2006 GABF and it shows. Far more flavor is packed into this beer than your average Amber ale. Pours a light coppery amber with a medium frothy white head. Lacing is decent, but not overly impressive. Has an amply bitter finish that rises in the tail end of the swallow with an aggressive attack. Good solid caramel malt underpinning. Hops are earthy. A little bit of chocolate malt provides complexity.

Pint @ Pittsboro location. Good aroma, bitter. Orange/grapefruit, caramel, paper. Clean, copper color. Good head that faded quickly, minoe lacing. Bittersweet flavor, initial sweetness gives way to a bitter taste. Like aroma, but stronger. More grapefruit than orange, caramel. toasted grain, fruity streak about it, call it apple. Lite body, oily creamy mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Nice amber, could drink all day, like the feel of it as I rolled on tongue.

Rich, hoppy amber. Pretty good balance. Definitely one of the better brews there.

Copper pour with tight white head and lace. Very light caramelly aroma. Light semi sweet malt flavor with almost no bitter. Night light medium bodied beer with creamy carbonation. Refreshing with a hint of bitter. A tad and just a tad more hop presence would have really set this beer off for me.
