Commercial Description:
Chosen by our guests as one of their favorite specialty beers, this brown ale is freshly brewed in the distinctive American style with a deep garnet hue and more hops and malt than its English counterparts. The use of roasted barley imparts a nut-like flavor. These special ingredients make for a deep, mellow ale that goes great with any meal.

Sampled at Durham WBF - poured a brown color with a thin tan head. Aroma of malt and nuts - taste is a roasted malt, with nuts, caramel and very faint hops - a middle of the road beer that doesn’t take any chances.

Draft sample at the brewpub. Pours a brown color with a thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel and nuts. The taste is dominated by green apple with some faint nutty malt notes. Medium bodied. Seems off.

Deep amber-brown hue. Nose is faint nuts and roast. Flavor is also on the lighter side of nutty roasty malts, finishes crisp. Thin and watery texture. A clean middle of the road brown ale well in the easy-drinking session range.

Copper/brown with a light white head and lace. Nothing on the nose detracted from this beer nor stood out. Toasted malt with a sour finish. Over carbonated. Not my favorite beer from them but a drinkable beer none the less.

A pretty run of the mill brown. Pours a nice tawny brown with a lightly toasted malt aroma. Hops are all but undetectable. Mouthfeel is pillowy and round. Certainly unoffensive, but little here to make this an enjoyable sessioner.

Bottle courtesy of durhambeer. Pours a dark clear brown with a white head. Smells vegetal and earthy. Tastes of caramel and some sweet malt. Average.

Sort of a ruby brown type color with a nice and thick tan head. Sweet toffee and caramel aroma. Flavor is malty and a bit nutty but mostly just plain and thin. Not offensive and not great. Just a plain brown ale. Seems more like a slightly improved Newcastle and not so much like a hoppier American brown.
