Commercial Description:
A beer style made famous because of Catherine the Great’s visit to England where she enjoyed the local stouts. She had batches of stout shipped to the palace in St. Petersburg, but in the long voyage the beer spoiled. Catherine was not amused! So some industrious British brewers made a super stout with a higher alcohol level and lots of hops (a natural preservative) and lo and behold... Imperial Stout!

12oz. via bmartin08. Drank at cellar temp. Pour is oily black with thick foamy brown head. Aromas strong of roasted malts, coffee, and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is very malty and roasty. Toffee flavors were also in the finish. Mid-grade impy at most. This one is nothing to jump up and down about.

12oz bottle, dated 1/24/07. Poured medium brown with really nothing going on for head.. kinda murky. The aroma was coffee-based with a medium roast to it.. semi-sweet chocolate and roasted barley as well.. worked fairly well. The flavor picked up some soy in addition to coffee and lesser chocolate.. tacky feel at the edges with a little bit of coffee bitterness and a little peppery alcohol.. bit hot as it wamed up. Medium-bodied and again tacky at times on the palate, impeding the flow a bit.. showed mild oxidation especially on the back. This was an OK stout, but not a good imperial one.

Best I’ve had from the Carolina Brewery. On tap at WBF in Raleigh. Nice black pour with dark mocha head. Very roasty, but no burnt bitterness. Tons of coffee and chocolate and a creamy taste. Really quite good.

Via trade with OldStyleCubFan, 12oz bottle, cool to see a cbc cap this week during CBC in San Diego. Pours black with a light brown head. Chocolaty and malty nose. Taste is sweet and chocolaty. Pretty good not bad.

Pours a very dark brown with absolutely no head to speak of. Smell is coffee, roasted malts and some alcohol. Taste is much the same, but something is smoothing this thing out. I don’t know when this was bottled, but this one tastes a little aged. Still plenty of roastiness. Good beer, needs to come a little bigger than this though.

black, fine tan head, lots of drippy lace, creamy body, sweet malt aroma with some nice ripe fruit that emerges upon warming, rich malt flavor, smooth roasted character, nice chocolate starts to emerge as it warms, the roasted along with some bitterness just keeps intensifing, and then it swings back to rich chocolate
