Commercial Description:
For those desiring a lighter beer that still has hand-crafted integrity, this beer is a German style Kolsch ale made famous in its namesake city of Cologne (Koln in German). This thirst-quenching summer brew is spritzy, not too malty, with all the pleasing aroma of German Hallertauer hops. While fermented warm like all ales, Kolsch beer undergoes a cold aging period like a lager which results in a brew that is complex yet easy to drink.

From notes 5/5/03: Poured a bright golden yellow color. Clear. A bubbly white head reduced to a milky film. Laces well. Slight smell if any. I could barely detect a scent. Grassy. The taste followed along with a grassy taste. Nice hop bite at the end, with a slightly grainy aftertaste. A subtle malt sweetness tempered by a healthy hop bite. Nothing heavy on the mouthfeel. An easy drinking pale pale ale without any nasty macro-ness involved.

Very light and airy. Not a bad beer, especially on a hot night. If you’re lookiing for a really big beer, though, you’re going to be disappointed.

Clear pale yellow/clear with little white head. Aroma of corn, noble hops. Flavor is thin, but slightly malty. Sort of boring.

On tap at the brewery. This is a nice refreashing light bodied beer. It’s a hell of a lot beter than light beers, much more complex and drinkable at least. Not much of an aroma, and the flavor is very simple compared to other Carolina Brews, but makes a good summer beer. It’s fairly sweet, the hops leave no bitterness, has a nice citrus finish, and has a higher than average carbonation.

On tap. Clear and golden with short-lived white head. Simple flavors of malts and hops, with a bit of honey sweetness at the finish. Mildly skunky; clearly a Miller Lite substitute for the swill populace.

Had this on tap at the brew pub in Chapel Hill. True to it’s name it is clear and golden. Not much nose. Head dissipates quickly. Refreshing, but bites you back. The palate, in particular, is a bit astringent. Crisp finish.

Draught. BMC pale yellow with small quickly dropping head. Clear as can be and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is malty and vegetal (some adjuncts may have been used or just some DMS). Flavor is dry and minimally malty with some husky astringency and fruity esters. Little to no hop flavor/bitterness to be found. No acetaldehyde as the BMC drinkers are sure to miss. Not full bodied and quite carbonated. Obviously Carolina brewery needs a beer to appeal to the swill drinking college students at UNC and this definitely is it.

Very light without much flavor. I think it’s designed for people who drink Miller Lite down the street at He’s Not Here.
