Commercial Description:
Our seasonal wheat beer is an ale with flavor like no other. Its unique banana and clove yeast characteristics make it the juicy fruit of beer. Technically speaking, this beer is known as a hefeweizen – hefe is the German word for yeast and weizen means wheat. Visually the beer is somewhat hazy – this is the hefe, taste-wise it is light yet malty – this is the weizen. This mouth-watering brew is often served with a slice of lemon for a zesty summer cooler.

Draft at the brewpub: this, I thought, was a kick ass wheat. Poured cloudy butterscotch yellow with a full thick white head. Banana and clove aroma with a bit of coriander. Full bodied and yeasty. Very nice. Well done Carolina!

Draught at the brewpub. Served with a lemon. Straw colored, hazy. Estery aroma and flavor. Yeast and banana flavors. Very refreshing.

Looking at a pint of this at the Bean and Barrel (girlfriend works here). I’m not so sure this is a winter seasonal though. Hazy pale amber with a nice thick creamy white head. Smells sour, powerful wheat rankness, ctirus shows too, lemon and spice. Straight up banana on taste, pepperoni (?), i definitely taste some kind of spice though (clove?), citrus, sweet. A good wheat for a small restaurant brewery. The palate is very interesting. At first it seems as though there is no carbonation, then when you swallow it turns your mouth cool and releases a final burst of refreshing sour wheat on your tongue. Very refreshing. Very impressed with the mouthfeel and finish.

Growler. Nose is wheat, lemon, citrus and yeast. Flavor is similar. Very clean, very easy drinking. Didn’t taste much of banana flavors I am used to tasting if my hefes. Could of sworn this was just an american wheat ale. Solid effort from carolina brewery and much more drinkable than a few of their offerings.

Draught. Appears a cloudy (but not overly cloudy as some wheats can be) golden yellow with small thick head. Aromas of typical banana and clove and nutmeg along with some sweet malt. No hop aroma present. Flavor is sweet, fruity, spicy and yeasty with a bit of hop bitterness. More banana than spice so probably fermented a bit warm. Finishes dry. Fairly full bodied with a smooth feel. Good weissen.

Draught at the brewpub. Pours cloudy yeloow with white head. The aroma is banana and clove with hearty yeast notes. The flavor is banana and clove of course, with slight toasty and a wisp of zest in the finish. A kick of raw wheat flavor comes out in the aftertaste. Pretty good.

Growler, sampled at the 1st Annual Shenandoah Beer Throwdown, courtesy of TURDFERGUSON. Thanks, Sam! Pours a hazy golden color; fluffy white head with good retention and mixed-bubbled lacing. Wheatiness, light citrus, and doughy yeast in the aroma; dry, crisp, husky. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy yeastiness, citrus, minerals, and breadiness upfront; average carbonation; light acidity coming through; very drinkable stuff. Medium finish: breadiness, wheat, and citrus; ends quite dry and crisp.

From notes 6/21/03: Pours a hazy cloudy orange-brown color. Murky and turbid. An off-white head formed slightly and left all sorts of lace in my glass. Aromas were juicy: orange citrus! Yeasty scents and some clove involved as well. The taste was wonderful! A smooth wheaty beer with the spice of bitter orange peel plus clove and banana. The banana was muted, but the zesty orange rind was not. Tasty as can be! Sharp mouthfeel, this had some bite to it. I ordered mine without the lemon garnish. Turns out this was tasty enough not to need one.
