Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA May 17, 2009 Sampled via 64-oz growler during Dark Lord Day ’09. Pours a clear cherry cola cramel colored brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, flowery hops and a touch of bitter apples. Taste is lightly carbonated, medium bodied with some flavors of dried dark pitted fruit, toasted dark malt and some citrus zest. Finish is slightly multi-grain gritty, dry with an average bitter aftertaste. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Apr 29, 2009 Clear reddish pour with a decent caramel sweetness and some toasty notes. But not at all what I would pick up if i wanted a schwarz. Same vegetal notes that appear in their other beers. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Feb 25, 2009 Copper pour with foamy head and lace. Caramel nose and caramel maltiness, a hint of smoke, followed by an earthy hop finish. A bit thin and watery to me detracted from it a tad but still a nice bp offering. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Feb 3, 2009 on tap-pours a light tan ring for a head and brown color. Aroma is medium/dark malt-chocolate/roasty, some earthy hops, dry. Taste is medium/dark malt-chocolate/roasty, fruity, some earthy hops, dry. chandler0201 (341), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jan 19, 2009 Dark brown/black pour with no head. Bread flavor malts, but slight tartness going down. Not too bad. freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA Dec 28, 2008 A beautiful looker but not much under the covers. Pours a dark mahogany and the ruby highlights play nicely when held up to the light. Head is frothy and large with nice lacing. Malt character shows a bit of pumpernickel bread and palate is soft. Has a slight tartness in the finish. Overall this is a pretty tame entry and I would have liked a little more in the flavor department. JCB (1716), Durham, North Carolina, USA Dec 22, 2008 On tap at Tylers, Durham. The bartender was not clear as to the style, and I confess to being surprised to see that this is a schwarzbier. I suppose it had some of the more pleasant aspects of a dark lager, a bit of a bite, a sharp lager yeast giving it some spice. But it honestly came across like a brown ale trying to flex its muscles a bit. Decent but nothing particularly special. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Dec 18, 2008 Draft at Mellow Mushroom. Dark brown, clean, no lacing, tiny white head. Brown sugar, caramel, and bit of spiciness in the aroma. The flavors combine more malt and a bit of a roasty spiciness with a fair amount of yeast in the finish. Quite clean finishing. Tastes quite similar to Samuel Adams Winter Lager.
