Commercial Description:
Winter Wonder is brewed in the German lager style known as Schwarzbier. This beer originated as a warm fermented ale style in central Germany before cold fermenting lager yeasts were introduced. This malty winter seasonal, though dark in color, is relatively light bodied and has a dry and refreshing finish.

Draft at Mellow Mushroom. Dark brown, clean, no lacing, tiny white head. Brown sugar, caramel, and bit of spiciness in the aroma. The flavors combine more malt and a bit of a roasty spiciness with a fair amount of yeast in the finish. Quite clean finishing. Tastes quite similar to Samuel Adams Winter Lager.

Dark brown/black pour with no head. Bread flavor malts, but slight tartness going down. Not too bad.

Sampled via 64-oz growler during Dark Lord Day ’09. Pours a clear cherry cola cramel colored brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, flowery hops and a touch of bitter apples. Taste is lightly carbonated, medium bodied with some flavors of dried dark pitted fruit, toasted dark malt and some citrus zest. Finish is slightly multi-grain gritty, dry with an average bitter aftertaste.

Copper pour with foamy head and lace. Caramel nose and caramel maltiness, a hint of smoke, followed by an earthy hop finish. A bit thin and watery to me detracted from it a tad but still a nice bp offering.

Growler. Deep brown color, small beige head. Aroma is a little nutty, with some caramel and a little roasted malt. Flavor is similar, light on the roastiness, little dry in finish. Tastes more like a nut brown.

On tap at Tylers, Durham. The bartender was not clear as to the style, and I confess to being surprised to see that this is a schwarzbier. I suppose it had some of the more pleasant aspects of a dark lager, a bit of a bite, a sharp lager yeast giving it some spice. But it honestly came across like a brown ale trying to flex its muscles a bit. Decent but nothing particularly special.
