Commercial Description:
While most of the German Rauch beers are lagers, we have brewed an ale. The malt profile is similar to an Oktoberfest, but with smoked malts being substituted for some of the two row pale malt. In Bamberg they say that you need to have at least eight liters of Rauch Beer before you can decide if you like it or not. It’s certainly an acquired taste. We have toned down the smokiness some so hopefully you’ll be enjoying it by the end of your first pint. It is a smooth, malty, amber beer with a distinct smoky finish. It’s 4.5% alcohol by volume.

12 oz bottle from ucusty. Labeled as Carolina Seasonal, Rauch Beer, 01/28/09, best by 04/28. Pours clear copper with a big off white head. Smoky nose, but does not defeat the caramel and sweet grain. Smoky flavor, not really a woody smoke, hard to place. Sweet grain and caramel. Light earthiness. A decent drinker.

bottle, from brewery, bottled 0/1/29/09, ok aroma, smoke (like day old burnt coals) , little fruity. Clean brownish orange color, good head that faded quick, minor lace. Flavor is like aroma. get a little more fruit than aroma. lite body creamy oily mouthfeel, dry but sticky finish. Not bad in the scheme of things. Once I read the commercial description I see why I was getting the fruit, from the ofest profile, about time I got around to this one, I bought it the week it came out, ha ha....

Bottle from Tom. I never like smoke beers for starters, but this one was somewhat drinkable; meaning I actually finished the glass of it. Brown color, no real head so to speak. Smell is smokey and thats really all I get. Taste is smokey, watered down, and has a huge wheat like prescence. Its an alright beer, but I think it would have been better as just a regular lager instead of imposing smoke into it... Thanks Tom.

aroma of toast, smoke, and jerky. Tastes of caramel, toast, rye, and mellow smoke. Finishes bready with a sweet smokiness. Yum. It’s alright overall, but nothing special really.

(12oz. bottle, courtesy of mar) Pours a clear golden body with a small white head. Aroma of smoke, roastiness, caramel, and light beef jerky. Flavor of subtle smoke, some meat, and caramel malt.

Bottle shared by ucusty. Wish we got more of the CBC seasonals around here... they’re so close! Clear amber brown pour. Thin gauzy white head. Sweet grainy nose and malt presence. Minor smoke presence. More sweet than smoky, but not too bad

Bottle shared by ucusty. Thanks Dave. Always exciting to try a new CBC beer. This is pretty meh as far as quality smoke beers go but not bad for my local brewery if you know what I mean. Not a very intense smokey flavor and sort of watered down at times, but for the most part it holds its ground and its not as bad as Jamie says though he is harsh critic of the smokey brewskis. Thanks for trying CBC!

Thanks ucusty! I’m always excited to try a smoked beer. This one was unfortunatel fairly plain. Amber colored with a thin head. Fruity apple aroma with faint smoke. The smoke takes a backseat to a simple Marzen like beer when it comes to the flavor as well. Whatever.
