Commercial Description:
While most of the German Rauch beers are lagers, we have brewed an ale. The malt profile is similar to an Oktoberfest, but with smoked malts being substituted for some of the two row pale malt. In Bamberg they say that you need to have at least eight liters of Rauch Beer before you can decide if you like it or not. It’s certainly an acquired taste. We have toned down the smokiness some so hopefully you’ll be enjoying it by the end of your first pint. It is a smooth, malty, amber beer with a distinct smoky finish. It’s 4.5% alcohol by volume.

Bottle shared by ucusty - thanks, David! Nose is grainy and somewhat sweet like a marzen. Leafy hops and some kinda bland caramel malts. Much the same profile as you get with many of their other seasonals, in other words. Thin body, clean palate, and only the mildest smoke.

Thanks ucusty for sharing. Pours a translucent light copper with a one finger light tan head. The nose is leafy, hoppy, bready malt, musty, some cardboard. Very little smoke comes through in the nose or flavor. Flavor is malty, some smoke, leafy hops. Not too hot.

Bottle thanks to mar. The smell is smoke, malts, breadlike, sort of weak. The look is clear, copper in color, not too much off white head. The taste is smoke, malts, caramel, and not much else. Ok but lacking some.

Bottle, thanks to ucusty. Aroma of smoked toast, some smoked meats, some residual sugars that were also smoked in their own way. Flavor of very generic malt with light smoke. Really needs either more smoke, more malt, or both. As is, the definition of bland for me.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small white head. Aroma of smoke and sweet malt. Flavor is slightly smokey but it also has some weird flavors which are hard to identify (sour milk maybe? Weird, I know, but I swear I taste it...followed by some stale vegetables). After the second sip it was super repulsive and practically made me gag. It started to taste like rotting garbage. Absolutely disgusting. 5/3/2/1/4 (1.5/5)
