| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 15, 2008 Bottle. Picked up as an extra in a trade. Pours a dark black body with a tan head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, and sweet malt. No real hops or etoh coming through here and very drinkable. I’d drink it again. Tilley4 (218), Huron, Tennessee, USA

Not quite black but let’s say a very very dark brown.... Smells a lot like a very dark coffee with chocolate and and maybe some vanilla notes thrown in as well... Wow, this is a deliciously creamy brew....it pours much thinner than it feels, I can say that.. Awesome taste of coffee and chocolate and smokiness....simply delightful...seriously, if I could get this where I lived, it would be my go to winter brew... Just amazing... surffisher (196), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 8, 2007 Pours very dark brown with ruby highlights and a nice bubbly tan head which recedes but retains well and leaves slight lacing. The aroma is very much of bitter dark chocolate, with some coffee/expresso notes, much like a black velvet cake dessert (with coffee of course!). Flavor is dry, roasted malts with plenty of coffee character and bittersweet chocolate, especially in the lasting finish. Medium-light-bodied, moderate carbonation, with a nice creamy mouthfeel - smooth. This is a well-done dry stout. It’s also held up really well in the 18 months since it was bottled. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 22, 2007 The aroma was roasty with a strong espresso coffee presence and a prominent toasty component. Some grassy hop notes were present as was some chocolate, but coffee ruled the day and brought with it some smoke! The beer poured into the glass pitch black with a tannish fleeting head which did lace a bit. The flavor was roasty and smoky and had some caramel maltiness but mostly roast, chocolate, toast and smoke comprised the majority of the flavor. The bittering level was substantial and in conjunction with the roasted barley kept the malt in check. The body was medium or a smidge above and the moderate level of carbonation did lead to a creaminess in the mouthfeel. The finish was bone dry with long lasting roast, smoke and coffee impressions long into the aftertaste and beyond. A really great stout, even after a few years! 12 ounce bottle. Bottled on 11/02/05. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 22, 2006 Bottle, thanks Surffisher! Pours ultra deep red with a nice white, rocky head. The aroma is just a bit chalky, with coffee and caramel being the major scents. The flavor profile is pretty decent with some brown sugar, walnuts, cream sweetness, and a bit of instant coffee. The whole beer reminds me of sitting something on a campfire for a little while. I didn’t find this to be particularly dry. Pretty good stout. 19641948 (491), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 16, 2006 From notes 11/29/05:
Dot-matrix info on the typical CBC seasonal beer label states this was bottled on 11/2/05. Purchased 11/23/05 at the brewery. Pours a deep strong black coffee color with a cola color along the edges when backlit. A rough pour into an imperial pint glass yields a 3-inch head of tan froth. Slowly dwindles away to a thin cap of milky film. Lacing in one continuous sheet. Delicious coffee aromas. Not a rough bitter espresso mode, but rather a creamy mocha latte fragrance. Flavors have a subtle char character; roasted barley meets wet doused campfire smokiness. Roasted coffee bean tone. Modest chocolate appearance; mix between syrup and powder. Sweet sugary syrup note followed by a light dusting of cocoa. Dry hoppiness; an airy English character. Finishes powdery dry with an aftertaste of char and smoke. Any chocolate sweetness is immediately tempered and held in check. Modest mouthfeel; not too thick, not too thin...juuust right. Very drinkable. The pint glass was drained in record time.
