We tasted a lot of imperial stouts that night. at least 10. This one was dark brown, a lightish shade of black, Had good chocolate coffee flavors with a mild hop bite. Pretty tasty offering from Carolina Brewing Company. Look forward to trying future creations from this brewery. TheBeerGod (3177), Newport News, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 25, 2007 Bottle courtesy of OldGrowth. Bottle date is 01/24/07 and it comes in at 8.8% ABV. Opaque dark brown but not black pour. Nose is roasted malts, licorice and coffee. Lots of coffee and roasted malt in this one. Taste is hops, coffee, roasted malts, licorice and soft alcohol. Body is medium with a creamy carbonation feel and a mild alcohol warmth. Ends with big licorice, hops, cold coffee, caramel and roasted malts. Nothing too distinguishing but still rather tasty! 00cobraR (1103), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

Flavor is very much the same. has a nice slight warming effect from the alcohol, but other than that it is nicely hidden. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 12, 2007 Wow, I got hit with a heavy aroma of roasted malts, real appealing. Pour gave my a huge head, tan thick and creamy. Nose was all the good things about stouts. The taste was bitter chocolate, sweet malts, touch of hops, lots going on here. I got a touch of licorice, some smoke even cherry? I LOVED this, look forward to more daring attempts from this brewer. OLDGROWTH, you rule my friend. jason (1627), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 10, 2007 Bottle. Thanks to OldGrowth for sending me this. Pour was a dark brown, but turned into a nice medium black beer with nice head, perfect looking stout. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, slight hops. Flavor was smooth and creamy with a light chocolate flavor, light hops, roasted malt. Medium mouthfeel. This really caught me by surprise. Good stout! NachlamSie (1657), Tennessee, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 20, 2007 Bottle, thanks OldGrowth!! Pours a decent black/red with a small tan head. This is fairly black, but not shockingly so. The aroma has a bit of alcohol nipping at my nose, more than I would expect from this kind of brew. Notes of espresso, caramel, and even slight hops are detected, thought nothing is truly assertive. Everything comes together in well balanced harmony as far the flavor goes. There are plenty of dry, nutty notes, bittersweet dark chocolate, hickory, slight espresso notes. The mouthfeel is not as viscous as I’d like from an impy and the alcohol is fairly apparent in the flavor. A good mix of woody notes and the spicier flavors found in a cigar come out in the finish. Hey, this is a good beer and I’m really excited to see more stuff like this coming out of NC. I just put beers of this style under harder scrutiny. CaptainCougar (5544), Rockville, Maryland, USA

Aroma of sweet dark caramel malts with a lot of dark chocolate and some earthy hop notes. Starts fairly full and dark caramely sweet with some earthy dark chocolate notes and a lingering, roasty bittersweet finish. A nicely-balanced, drinkable imperial stout.
