Pours black and thick with a head, good roasting, good balance between bitter and malt, and very drinkable-I was sorry to have finished it but not sorry to have had it at the end of my dinner. I would have this on a regular basis if available, thank you Captain Cougar. TheBeerGod (3167), Newport News, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 25, 2007 Bottle courtesy of OldGrowth. Bottle date is 01/24/07 and it comes in at 8.8% ABV. Opaque dark brown but not black pour. Nose is roasted malts, licorice and coffee. Lots of coffee and roasted malt in this one. Taste is hops, coffee, roasted malts, licorice and soft alcohol. Body is medium with a creamy carbonation feel and a mild alcohol warmth. Ends with big licorice, hops, cold coffee, caramel and roasted malts. Nothing too distinguishing but still rather tasty! riversideAK (2770), Shoreline, Washington, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 27, 2008 Bottle from ucusty. Thanks man! Dark brown pour with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of roast, chocolate, caramel, and some strong hoppiness. Flavors start sweet and malty. Bitterness in the form of roast and earthy hops followed, but an off flavor makes its presence felt at all that I might describe as somewhat acrid. As it warms, some sweetness comes through and caramel malts soften the acrid bitterness. Somewhat hot too. Body seems a little thin.
