Commercial Description:
We will be releasing our first high alcohol beer, Old 392, which is named after House Bill 392 that was passed into law allowing beer over 6% alcohol in North Carolina. Barleywines are brewed with traditional beer ingredients but with a high alcohol content that gives the finished beer some wine like characteristics. Old 392 is a rich, chewy, amber colored beer with a warm, alcohol taste, a piney hop aroma and a dry finish. It is unfiltered, dry hopped and weighs in at 9.3% alcohol by volume.

12oz bottle shared courtesy of Zrrbrrt. Bottle labeled, botled on 11/21/06. This one also had 8.7% alc printed on it. Poured a medium to deep amber color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of light caramel, orange peels, pine, and some dark fruits. Tastes of pine, citrus, caramel, and some dark fruits.

Pours a lightly hazy copper orange with a thin wispy off-white head. Dry peppery bittersweet aroma has some citrusy hoppy presence. Body starts with some dry earthy maltiness turning to a very bitter peppery finish with some alcoholic notes. Doesn’t have enough balance and complexity. Needs more flavor hops and less bittering ones.

Bottle... A&K’s4thAHBT... Clear, golden ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Citrusy, piney aroma with lots of grapefruit and a little toffee. Well-balanced, but a touch bland. Full-bodied and silky with medium carbonation. Finishes medium bitter and grassy.

This one pours deep copper with aroma of caramel malt, big hops, citrus and tropical fruit. The hopcitric elements overshadow the tropical fruit elements, but I was impressed by the balance and intensity of this one. In another life, this one could indeed be called an IIPA. However you choose to categorize it, it is very good.

Bottle (thanks Wilkie): A nice clean coppery hue with a small head and some lace. The aroma has notes piney and grapefruit hops, light caramel, pepper and dusty yeast esters. The flavor starts with a nice sharp citric twang and with smooth spice kick. Bready layer of sweetness underneath. The feel is smooth yet a nice bite, a bit thin in the body. Kudo for producing a nice easy drinking barleywine.

Thanks to Styles for this one. Poured a clear orange-copper color and leaving an "oily film" when swirled. Aroma is sweet and malty with some alcohol and over ripe peaches. Flavor starts sweet and fruity but stops abruptly. Dry bitter finish. Nice warming sensation. Medium to full body.
