Excellent Winter Ale, much like the Summit Winter Ale or Capital Winter Skal. Thin white head dissipates into a ring at the top for the remainder of the beer. Very smooth for such a high alcohol content. Overall an excellent beer that I would buy if it were in my stores. BOLTZ7555 (1121), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 25, 2008 Received the bottle from my Beer-of-the-Month Club...glad my wife supports my habit!!! Fairly sweet caramel-like aroma and crystal-clear maroon body. Thin 1/8th inch khaki head and good carbonation resulting in numerous bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Flavor is sweet and spicy. Pepper, nutmeg, with a bitter cherry finish. I liked it. As with most beers that I’ve had with this membership, pleasant but not extraordinary. craftbeerdesign (770), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 23, 2008 bottle from my BOM club. sugary, spicy aroma... amber color, no head. somewhat strong flavor, the alcohol is a bit too noticeable. spicy on the tip of the tongue, soapy on the sides. Finishes with a thicker, sweet bitterness. Pretty good... WillieV (191), Maryland, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Feb 23, 2008 Bottle: Poured a nice dark red color with a thin film of a head. Scent is of bread and sugar. Low carbonation as it sits. Flavor is nothing to be excited about. Tastes like an average winter. BOTM yankeefan21 (82), USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Feb 22, 2008 Pours a coppery red with no head to speak of and a strong clover smell. No real body to speak of with a slick feel on the tongue. The finish has a slightly metalic aftertaste that is somewhat unpleasant. Not really a fan. thegreenrooster (1852), St.louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 22, 2008 Pour is a ruby red with a tan head. Aroma is of some burnt malts and a strong spice. Flavor is a nice deep malt with some more spice and a nice dose of hops. Alcohol is no problem for a 7.3% even though i can feel it warming the extremities. This is a very nice spiced out winter warmer. carboloader (330), Houston, Texas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 20, 2008 Pours amber mahogany with a nice soapy head. Sweet candy malts in aroma. Flavor is not as malty with a tasty initial carbonation bite followed by a lovely hoppy and warmly bitter finish. Not terribly complex in the malt department, but easy to drink. A nice drinkable winter ale. JCB (1799), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Feb 20, 2008 12oz from a beer club. Dark amber pour with caramel malts in the aroma. I was expecting this to be a sweet, warming ale. But instead it’s like a variation on Casco’s red, with a kind of harsh grassy hop flavor that overpowers the sweeter, old ale qualities. A shame, but it’s not a horrible beer (even if not exactly as advertised).
