Draft @ Barley’s (NC): Please first let me reveal my bias for coffee stouts. That being said, yum!! This smells like some nice cold-pressed coffee, mixed with raw coffee beans. This one is smooth and bittersweet and comfortable.

Draft sample at KBJ08. Poured black color with medium brown frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium roasted coffe and chocolate malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium flavor of roasted sweet coffee with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid brew.

2008 Knoxville Brewers’ Jam. Pours orange black with thin tan head. The aroma is identical to chocolate-covered espresso beans. The flavor is espresso, mild vanilla, and ash. There’s just a little bit of harsh tannin. Quite good.

Sampled at the 12th Annual Knoxville Brewer’s Jam. Deep black with brown hints and some nice lacing on this light tan head. Coffee aromas, fresh roasted beans. Strong coffee flavors contribute to a bitter and roasty body with just a hint of chocolate.

Brewer’s Jam. Pours a near black with some ruby color and a fair tan head. Coffee is certainly apparent in the aroma and is well shaped. Hints of butter, wax chocolate, and biscuits are also noted. The mouthfeel is just medium, but makes the coffee flavor refreshing. Yeah, roast, coffee are apparent, but the finish doesn’t do this justice. Hints of toffee, biscuits, and wax chocolate are noted. Drinkable, but muddled.

Sampled at Brewgrass 2008. Chestnut/walnut pour with a big frothy/foamy head. Aroma has light coffee and roasted grain with a touch of sweetness. Easy light flavor with a bit of coffee and roasted grain. Body is a bit thin. This is nothing great, but I had Valez first and this just didn’t stand up.

pours a black pour, light smooth coffee aroma, and light front with mild milk like palate on the finish. good java stout as it was described to me, but mild on the overtness of the coffee.
