Bottle under the guise of ’’Bourbon Barrel Barleywine 2008’’. Wonderful aroma; sweet, butterscotch and plenty of strength. Hazy reddish amber color with light tan, tight bubble head that lasts. This brew is outstanding. Silky smooth caramel butter slides from the front to the back of the tongue, igniting the palate like a spark ignites a pilot light. The alcohol zaps your tongue on the finish and is considerably warming. It’s not every day that you have a barrel aged barleywine, so it doesn’t remind me of many other barleywines, although it does fit the style with its palpable malt bill and high gravity profile. I picked this brew up along with the bourbon barrel cherry stout, at Woodman’s in Madison expecting very good beers, but not necessarily world class beers. I paid $3.19 a piece for 12 oz bottles. I’m quite impressed. I remember 5-6 years ago attending a bottle only beer fest in Wisconsin Rapids with about 20 brewers represented and Central Waters’ offerings clearly best of show. There’s talent in that house beyond the bourbon barrel stout, which I see is only 1 point ahead of this brew in average rating. I dig this brew and perhaps it’s enough to pull me out of my rating hiatus?

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a lazing off-white head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, caramel, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel, alchol, malt, and bourbon. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Bottle:   Deep dirty caramel, thick, hazy, head is off-white, moderate, foamy, with clingy lacing.   That nose is so delicious, sweet malty goodness, Bourbon, Vanilla, and hints of caramel and brown sugar. &bnsp Fiery on the tongue, big Bourbon.   When they said this is barrel aged, they weren’t kidding. &bnsp Huge Bourbon and Vanilla flavors on the backside.   Full bodied, good mouthfeel, a little sticky and heavy.   Finishes with lingering Bourbon and Vanilla.   This was solid... great stuff!   Wish I had more to put down for a bit.   Thanks Bob for the bottle!

Thanks bvc! Stinging aroma but I go back for more. Deep wood, floral and velvet. Tawny caramel, thin. Great wood on the palate, strong toasted hazelnut, classy.

12oz bottle labled ’2009 Bourbon Barrel Barleywine’ from Ughsmash. Sticky sweet bun rolls, vanilla, prune...really bready and sweet. Brown sugar, raisins, prunes, tons wood...that has a toasted/charred taste. Also showing some oxidation already with a bit of tobacco-port as well. Super sweet and big...up my alley. Thanks Jason for this one.

Bottle for rating #300. Pour is dark reddish brown with a medium tan head. aroma is rich toffee malt, vanilla, caramel, light bourbon, very faint hop, and a pleasing subtle coconut flavor. My goodness, this smells amazing. Flavor is rich toffee, slightly more hop presence than expected, nice vanilla bourbon flavor, rich creamy malt, light wood, and light butterscotch. This is a sleeper. I did not expect it to b bad, but I did not think it would be this good. The aroma is slightly better than the flavor, but it’s great.
