GABF 2008. Cloudy copper brown. Huge caramel and toast aroma. Densely malty palate, toast and bread crusts, quite full bodied. Reminiscent of a quality doppelbock. Fantastic.

GTMW! Dark ruby pour with a light tan head. Chocolate and caramel aroma. Flavor was toffee, chocolate covered cherries, toffee, and caramel. Light boozy finish.

GTMW ’08. Poured a clear dark orange color with a light tan head. Smelled of toffee, molasses, and a bit of burnt caramel. Lots of malt. Medium to full bodied and sweet. The flavor palate included the likes of molasses, toffee, caramel, and subdued date. Again, lots of malt. Pretty good.

cloudy copper to brown pour w/ a full tan head and good lacing. I smell sweet beer.. nose is broken. Full well coated palate. Very sweet syrupy mostly , touch of some light nuts. Very sweet. Good but too sweet.

On tap at GTMW. Poured deeper brown with a short cap of beige head. The aroma was very sweet with chocolate and cereal notes leading.. too sweet, but it at least held the alcohol in check. The flavor was also on the sweet side, but plenty of alcohol was evident, especially toward the back.. spicy oak and peppery notes rode over nice caramelization at the core.. grainy sugars on the finish. Too sweet on the palate with nice spicy and herbal highlights.. warm finish. Just didn’t do it for me.

GTMW 2008. The beer pours to a dark amber/copper body with a thin light tan head. The aroma is sweet toffee and deeply rich medium brown malts. Rich sweet body with a heavy mouth feel. Toffee and sweet malts in the flavor. Nice vanilla. Medium-full body.

Great Taste of the Midwest 2008

A special release from Central Waters (at least at this point) this popped on my radar while sitting in line waiting to get in. I figured I would try it if I got there but otherwise life could go on. That turned out to be the case. It is a solid but not spectacular attempt at an old ale. Still above average it hopefully will make an appearance in the future.

Aroma / Appearance - The caramel brown body was pretty lifeless. Clingy lacing stuck to the sides as I sampled it. The scent of brownies drizzled with caramel contrasts against another dessert aroma of peanut butter chocolate cheesecake. Just smelling it made me want to get something rich after leaving Olin Park.

Flavor / Palate - The smoothness of the barrel melded well with caramel, chocolate and malt. Heavy it almost immediately sunk to the bottom of my stomach marking the end of the big beer samples for the day. If it were the only thing I had in a night I might be able to finish a pint. Otherwise life would get rough later in the night.
