| 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/20 | Oct 31, 2006 Marketed and priced just like real gueze but in reality doesn’t come close. Nose and palate is dominated with fermenting grape and apple juice aromas, the latter character to a fault. A good example of sweetened gueze that just doesn’t work. This isn’t beer - its moscato! | 0.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/20 | Feb 22, 2006 Same vintage as Styles’ bottle (Best before Oct/Nov ’95 or ’96) purchased from Embassy Liquors. Shared with OldGrowth on 2/17/2006. Popping the wetted cork reveals vegetal and corn syrup like flavors, very powdery and quite well summed up by the "baby diaper" moniker. Corn cobs, wet wool, musty corks and a high amount of acetic acid. Any lambic qualities that this may have possessed have been completely subsumed by the thick, caramel/candi sugar. A slight sourness on the end, not a lactic, but a sharp, dry sourness reminiscent of spoiled veggies soaking in rusty water. Faint in the aroma at least. Not so in the flavor. The beginning I can handle, that being thick, syrupy, sugary, plant-like notes, mixed with vanillin and musty, dry cork flavor. However, this sharpness/rusty sourness, whatever you want to call it, ruthlessly invades the palate providing strong notes of iron, dirty, cold steel and rotten veggies. Not palateable, and in fact, I couldn’t even swallow a single mouthfeel, not trusting the integrity of the ingredients. Mix of wateriness to smooth syrupy sugariness for a texture, with some fair carbonation still perceptible. The beer is much too dark for a gueuze, something like Lancaster Old Sourpuss (though not quite so dark), with an immediately diminishing ring of bubbles. I can understand the heavy sweetness of this pseudo lambic, but where are the veggies and hugely mineralic/metallic notes coming from?? Glad I tried it, in that it makes me appreciate the true lambic producers that much more (though de troch did a decent job with the chapeau cuvee, oddly enough). Poor man’s faro is right. This wouldnt even score too much higher in that style.
