Heavy molasses nose that competes for aromatic supremecy with the strong raisin smell. Flavor is roasty and chocolatey with a delicate sweetness. Medium bodied with a flat finish. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 25, 2006 Charleston Brown Ale pours to a beautiful deep amber/brown color with a nice tan head that eventually fades, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose is very interesting, it is sweet malty and nutty, with a nice back drop of woody/earthy aroma. Can a beer actually smell like mulch? This beer does! And not in a bad way, it is actually quite pleasing. The body on this beer is soft, with some nice sweet malty flavors, a touch of chocolate, a touch of roast, and a nice underpinning of nutty flavors. Charleston Brown finishes with more sweet and nutty flavors up front, and dries with a oaky vinous like note.
A very interesting, and tasty take on Brown Ale. As a seasoned beer hunter, it is always rewarding to find a local gem like this. This beer is indeed hard to find, it is only available in the Carolinas and southern parts of Virginia as far as I know. Seek this beer out if you can find it. I believe it would make an excellent desert beer, I would match this with an ice cream sundae with hot fudge and caramel. This is a nice brew to sit and sip after dinner with, and would make a nice night cap as well.

It is nutty, sweet, and toasty, but lets down with its watery aftertaste. GonZoBeeR (2163), ste-Eulalie, Quebec, Canada

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 22, 2005 Somehow, this got packaged with a neckband that has the description of their White ale - wow - you’d be really confused if you read that description and tasted this brew!!!! Reddish-brown and quite clear bodied, short tan head, very little lacing. Aroma is light, with some caramel. Average malty taste with a lingering Nutella nutty finish. This seems to be a mass-market style brewery - this beer should compete well against Newcastle. Found this at Chip’s - Mile post 6 on OBX., 2005 TheBeerOrg (1590), Kentucky, USA

Fruity aroma with some floral hops. Lots of crystal malts make this sweet and biscuity. Medium bodied with malty finish. jasonp (1514), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | May 7, 2005 Clear brown/ruby red with a creamy beige head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, chocolate syrup and malted milk balls. The flavor, however, is not nearly as interesting; ho-hum moderate notes of some chocolate, caramel, coffee, nuts and toffee. Not that sweet, not that bitter. Medium-thin body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Drinkable but boring.
