| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 25, 2006 Charleston Brown Ale pours to a beautiful deep amber/brown color with a nice tan head that eventually fades, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose is very interesting, it is sweet malty and nutty, with a nice back drop of woody/earthy aroma. Can a beer actually smell like mulch? This beer does! And not in a bad way, it is actually quite pleasing. The body on this beer is soft, with some nice sweet malty flavors, a touch of chocolate, a touch of roast, and a nice underpinning of nutty flavors. Charleston Brown finishes with more sweet and nutty flavors up front, and dries with a oaky vinous like note.
A very interesting, and tasty take on Brown Ale. As a seasoned beer hunter, it is always rewarding to find a local gem like this. This beer is indeed hard to find, it is only available in the Carolinas and southern parts of Virginia as far as I know. Seek this beer out if you can find it. I believe it would make an excellent desert beer, I would match this with an ice cream sundae with hot fudge and caramel. This is a nice brew to sit and sip after dinner with, and would make a nice night cap as well.

Fruity aroma with some floral hops. Lots of crystal malts make this sweet and biscuity. Medium bodied with malty finish. GeneralGao (3067), Iowa City, Iowa, USA

Heavy molasses nose that competes for aromatic supremecy with the strong raisin smell. Flavor is roasty and chocolatey with a delicate sweetness. Medium bodied with a flat finish. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 11, 2006 Poured a translucent brown color with an ok head and lacingg that was ok. Aroma on this one was hard to pick up, maybe some toasted malts. The fflavor was an odd liquor type flavor in the front of everything (sorry, I don’t know my liquors, nor can I say this was high abv, but boy, it was liquor sweet and sharp). Bitter nuts picked up mid-glass and as it warmed some sweet type candy came out. Too strong of an odd liquor type flavor in this one to be great.
