BeerEssential (90), Massachusetts, USA Jul 4, 2008 Although typically the least expensive of the red, white and blue Chimays, this is my favourite, perhaps since it was the first one I tried and the one I have the most experience with. Sweet, spicy, fruity and woody scent. The colour is my favourite type among beers - a very cloudy copper with a nice fluffy off-white head that settles to a nice thin layer with some lacing, but not that much. Taste is malty, a bit spicey-fruity with a bit of a bitter edge, but no noticeable alcohol. Ends with a bit of a long, but smooth bitterness. Manages to come off as light but not watery. Extremely drinkable.
yumyum (55), barrie, Ontario, Canada Sep 2, 2008 very nice brew, copper colour, carbonation evident but not disruptive of flavour. A lot of malty caramel notes with mild fruitiness in the flavour. Very nice easy drinking double. Rune_Stumo (80), FØRRESFJORDEN, Norway Aug 31, 2008 31.08.2008, 0,33l Bottle. The beer is lively carbonated. The colour is redish brown. Aroma is well balanced. Very nice. Rynoplasty (201), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Aug 30, 2008 Another great chimay brew. A dark reddish brown but easy drinking belgian. Not near as much of the wine like tastes of the blue or the tripel, but a very good dubbel. Bigmmartin (208), Dayton, Ohio, USA Aug 29, 2008 Bottle sampled at Dayton Ale Fest. Dark brown color with a fairly thick head. Not much lacing. Extremely drinkable Belgian brew but not the most complex. It’s pretty hard to compare this one to the Chimay Blue. Still, has nice sweet flavors of raisins and other fruit with slight yeasty aromas and flavors as well. Pretty dry finish. Angeloregon (1898), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 29, 2008 750ml bottle from By the Bottle in Vancouver, WA--Poured a rich, ruby-chestnut body with a full beige head. Yeastiness, hoppiness, and sweet maltiness prevailed on this beer. Lots of aroma and fruity complexities. Effervescent mouthfeel, but not over the top. Gritty, full-bodied texture. Great hoppy profile. Spicy yet easy on the palate. I could drink this all day.
