Commercial Description:
Select Dunkel is a traditional German styled dark lager, brewed in accordance with Germany's RheinheitsgebotPurity Law of 1516. What makes Select Dunkel distinctive is its smooth refreshing drinkable flavor and its clean finish. We think you'll agree that Christian Moerlein Select Dunkel is quite simply a better dark beer.

Bottle. Unimpressive dunkel - should have guessed it coming from the Moerlein. Not a favorable balance. Needs to be a bit maltier. Just not much there. I’m really at a loss for words here.

Good taste and color. It pours very well and has an inviting color. Smooth until the end but not the most impressive beer I’ve ever had.

12oz bottle pours dark brown and fairly clear with nice creamy tan head that stays pretty well and laces a little. aromas of caramel, yeast, and some mild roasted malt. Smooth chocolate and caramel flavor as well as a bit of roastiness. yeast there too. Some German hops on the finish. Medium bodied and a good creamy mouthfeel. Not bad..

Bottle. Caramel and bread/yeast aroma. Light brown with small head. Light sweet caramel and bread flavor. A bit watery - would be a great beer with more body.

Nice pale brown color with a one finger head and very little lacing. Okay smell to it. Some yeast and a little grain. I don’t smell too much else in this one. Smooth taste of some yeast and slightly roasted grain. I occasionally picked up a hint of caramelly malt. The finish left something to be desired. It was a bit dingy and too bitter. Easy to drink.

On tap in Zinzinnati. Not bad, but not a 3.28. Watery American style dark beer. Pale brown/russett color with minimal head. Nice spicy hoppiness with a diluted roast malt flavor. Pleasant and easily quaffable, yet unremarkable.

Similar to Sam Adams Black Lager, which I also don’t much care for. It has dark, chocolate overtones that just don’t mix with the bitter tones. Maybe I just don’t like dark chocolate.

Traditional dunkel. Opens with a big burst of chocolate flavors and dark grains carry it along nicely. Finishes nice and dry. Does not have any remarkable qualities, but it remains a pretty enjoyable quaff nonetheless. Something like Warsteiner Dark, overall.
