Commercial Description:
Select Dunkel is a traditional German styled dark lager, brewed in accordance with Germany's RheinheitsgebotPurity Law of 1516. What makes Select Dunkel distinctive is its smooth refreshing drinkable flavor and its clean finish. We think you'll agree that Christian Moerlein Select Dunkel is quite simply a better dark beer.

This beer is actually brewed under contract at the Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Lion Brewery for the Cincinnati-based Christian Moerlein Brewing Company (who purchased the Moerlein brands from Snyder - who took over the brand from Hudepohl). Anyway, the beer is a fine, lovely dunkel with a hoppy, refreshing taste that I plan to purchase again.

Clear reddish-brown body and a somewhat loose soda-like off-white head. Deeply caramelized, malty, toffee aroma with notes of tobacco, cocoa, and fig-like dark fruit. Pleasant, enjoyable aroma. Fairly strong, lingering caramel flavor with a touch of roasty, smoky phenols. Medium sweetness is well-balanced by the roasty character and light bitterness. Very little discernible hop character. Medium body is somewhat sticky but never reaches cloying levels. May stretch the bounds of the dunkel style, but I quite like this. Would pair well with BBQ. I wish more American brewers would replace their requisite amber or brown with beers of comparable character to this one.

Pours a dark amber brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma is malty, and the taste is good and malty as well with caramel tones. Overall pretty good.

Draft. Friends had a keg of this one. Another great beer from Christian Moerlein. Nice dark color, nice roasted flavor. An all around good beer.

Good malty aroma with the dark caramel dominating. Dark mahagony brown in color with a light tan head. Nice malt flavors with a good medium to slightly full body. Beer has a slightly bitter finish to it that compliments the malt well. Reminds me of a lighter version of their well made doppelbock. A good example of a German style Dunkel.

12 oz bottle via shigadeyo (thanks!).Pours a dark reddish brown with a large but quickly dissipating head. Nose is toasted malts, toffee, hazleuts, and figs. Taste is the same a bit biscuity and a litle chocolate as well. Very smooth, balanced and easy to drink. Plesantly surprised by this!

New to MD and just out on shelves - Chestnut browns and ambers, creamy off white head. Nose was initially sweet and malty with a light bready, nutty tone emerging as it warmed up. Additional notes of toasted caramel, grains, and light chocolate came in late. Good balanced flavors ensue with bready, nutty, caramel and molasses notes sprinkled throughout, and a very light hop bitterness pulling it together. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, lightly sweetened, malty, bready, light nutty finish. Actually, this was pretty damn tasty. A nice change of pace from my typical session brews...
