Commercial Description:
Christoffel Robertus is a low-fermenting ruby-red beer, brewed in the Münchener-style. It is a malty, fresh beer with a light sweetness. The typical hopbitterness found in Blond, is very lightly present in Robertus. The use of an extensive amount of selected barley gives Robertus the special malty taste and aroma.

Cloudy medium reddish brown. Some unfiltered sediment. Light beige head. Fresh grainy, grassy, toasty, malty aroma. Firm yet soft feel. Clean, complex flavour of nuts, fruit, toast, whole wheat bread. Dry, peppery finish. Good bitterness.

33cl Bottle at Café Gollem. Dark amber colour, creamy light beige head. Aroma of caramel, sweet malts, a hint of chocolate. Flavour is sweet, toasted malts, caramel, some nuttiness. Slightly dry bitter finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Overall very German, and good.

Nice dark ruby color. Very small to no head. Sweet malt aroma, with some subtle fruit. Flavour is again, quite malty, and sweet. I find it quite similar to a very malty barley wine minus the alcohol. Nice beer.

pours slightly hazy orangy brown with a big, lacy off white head. fruity, yeasty, cotton candy-ish aroma. low carbo. sweet fruity(strawberry?) malts. hints of alcohol and mint. not as beautifully hoppy as it’s blond sister, but still very nice

[Sampled at the outside fireplace in 2004.] Amber beer with fresh aroma. Flavor is lesshoppy and with the usually viennanotes of caramel, sweetmalts and fruits.

Tap @ Kafe Belgie. Aroma and flavour are full of molasses, spoiling everything.

Amber colored brew. Malty aroma. Sweet malts, sugary, some sourness. Not balanced enough.

Beers like this are dificult to dislike if they are in good condition, but conversely hard to really love if you are keen on a hop balance in your beer. Everything about the presentation of the beer is fine as it pours well, has a fine head and a sweet malty biscuit like aroma. As indicated, the absence of a real hop presence detracts from my enjoyment of the beer, but subjectivity aside it is a well made beer that will surely appeal to many.
