Commercial Description:
Christoffel Robertus is a low-fermenting ruby-red beer, brewed in the Münchener-style. It is a malty, fresh beer with a light sweetness. The typical hopbitterness found in Blond, is very lightly present in Robertus. The use of an extensive amount of selected barley gives Robertus the special malty taste and aroma.

Pours a rich copper brown with a thick, puffy, light tan head. Malt and fruit aroma. Flavor is also sweet fruity and malty with a somewhat strange eartly tone.

Lager? I saw dubbel on the label and just figured Belgian style. Cool, now I’m intrigued. GUSHER. Lost about a quarter of the bottle. Slight haze, deep caramel and a tall sparse white head. Dry caramel malt aroma. Sweet woodsy caramel, medium bodied, lingering toasty finish.

Dark copper body and a nice ecru head. The aroma is a touch ashy yet with a hint of sweetness. The carbonation is a little much for me, but the finish has a nice bite to it with some hops. The flavor is a little thin, though.

Bottle. Eck. I bought this beer because it caught my eye slightly. I had no idea what I was getting myself into to be honest. The beer was extremely malty. Far far too malty for my drinking pleasure. Extremely sweet as well, to the point where I was unable to finishi this beer. The bottle I drank felt fairly flat so it could have been a bum bottle. Drain pour.

Deep amber/brown color. Aromas of fruit, malt, and spice. Taste is sour malt, with a bit of citrus.

11.2 floz bottle from WLV, Chicago. Hazy, dark ruby red with small off-white head. Fruiy with aged notes of dough, interesting. Red fruit, dough, med sweet, some raspberry, not bad. Thin to medium body, nice carb. Not bad.

I find many Viennas sweet and cloying, but I enjoyed this fruity, untypical example. It poured the colour of cherry cola with a slight haze and a 1cm head that receded quickly. Couldn’t be arsed waiting for it to warm from the fridge (second beer of the night, what the hell) , so it’s no great surprise that the aroma was initially subdued. I picked faint chocolate, cola and melon, but none of the caramel malt that I associate with the style. In a blind tasting, I certainly wouldn’t pick this as a Vienna from the aroma alone. Perhaps that’s not surprising since the brewer’s pilsener is also untypical. Ah... first sip and it tastes closer to style than it smells. Quite light and fruity but with a solid backbone of caramel malt. Bread, chocolate, caramel, cola, melon. Well balanced, this. Just enough hops in the finish to take the edge off the sweetness. Quite a flat mouthfeel but it suits this beer. (33cl bottle, IBS Perth, bb Aug 2006)
