Commercial Description:
Christoffel Robertus is a low-fermenting ruby-red beer, brewed in the Münchener-style. It is a malty, fresh beer with a light sweetness. The typical hopbitterness found in Blond, is very lightly present in Robertus. The use of an extensive amount of selected barley gives Robertus the special malty taste and aroma.

(330 ml bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/portland/ target=blank>Downeast Beverage Co.) Pretty nice, a little different for the style...Pours a murky orangish-brown with about one finger of khaki head. Head recedes to a thin, somewhat globby cap. Aroma is quite honeyish and sweet, coupled with something else sort of like licorice. Mouthfeel quite full, but at the same time a little loose. Flavor is sort of honeyish and sweet, coupled with that licorice-like note. Some bitterness overlays. Has a touch of German lager smokiness. This beer reminds more of both a bock (honey) and an altbier (licorice) than a Vienna (caramel).

Best Till - Oct 2003 (bought on sale at the LCBO, so it's been collecting dust in the store since Christmas) Nice aroma, sour in the nose with a bite of alcohol. But not over powering. Smooth and sour in taste, very very slight alcohol taste but the sour malt taste makes up for that. Very enjoyable. I'll have to get a fresher one in December.

Copper coloured with small creamy head. Malty aroma and taste. It is sweet, but less than expected from a double malted beer. The taste dissappears quickly.

It was a rather nice drink, if I may say so.
Poured a hearty rusty amber body and a full and creamy head. The aroma and flavor were rather sweet and malty. Notes of caramel, and toffee malt, mildly toasty, somewhat bready, and evenly hopped... which was apparent in a hint of lemon zest in the finish. Nothing oh so complex… but a nice all-around drink.

Cloudy, amber body with a small white head, aroma of sugar, raisin, flavor is sweet, like sweet raisins and other overripe fruit, sticky mouthfeel, hint of alcohol in the finish.

After the superb Blond (can’t believe I just wrote that, surely brunettes are better than blondes...) this one just didn’t move a mountain, so to speak.
From the bottle at the Cambrinus bar in lovely Rotterdam, Holland.
Into a Christoffel flute a little too chilled. Reddish copper in body, quite deep, mysterious, adorned by a limp, soapy white head that, although didn’t excite, did manage to last a session and work magic on the glass. Its dusty but rich in the aroma, a lot of chocolate tones and a drier edge of wood build it out with just a side of tangy, ripe dark fruit. Very pleasant. It differs in the mouth greatly. It is sadly fizzy, light bodied and has a presence of alcohol unbecoming of its modest ABV. Notes of toffee, crushed peanuts, pecans and almond-meal, and a little savoury fruit - like sultanas and raisins - raise it a little but it becomes non-dimensional by the end, and as it warms shows a little micro-metal dust on the palate, a little oxidation (not good for a fresh sample). Equally, though, this wasn’t too bad a beer against some of the, well, others (..and I still prefer a brune... aah, bugger it!). Quaffing material atleast. (33cL, BBE 04/06)
