Commercial Description:
Merry Christmas! Our new SP#3 is a tribute to all the employees and customers of the Church Brew Works. The brewing of a Christmas beer to say thank you to its employees and loyal customers is a western European tradition. The British have Christmas ales, the Germans have weihactbier, the US has spiced ales, and the French have biere de noel. The tendency in all these beers is to up the ante in color, body, and alcohol and our example is no different. Biere de noel falls into the biere de garde style. This style originates in the northern French departments (counties) Pas de Calais and Nord along the English Channel and Belgian border. Biere de garde is the French contribution to the world of brewing. The style is a fine example of the artisan practice of brewing. These beers got there start being brewed in farmhouses as opposed to large commercial breweries that preferred to brew lighter lagers. Our example of this style sticks to tradition. When you taste the beer you will notice the big malty body and the taste of toffee and raisins. The hop character is subtle but it will linger after you’ve finished your sip. The ABV although higher than a traditional biere de garde is not overpowering. I did this on purpose so that the malt body will shine. Thank you for all your hard work and I hope everybody enjoys your present from the brew crew.

On tap in the Church. Body is a cloudy and tawny brown with a thin tan head. Big aromas of dark fruit and brown sugar foreshadow the flavor that is to come... fig and raisin, brown sugar and spice all come together to make this pretty nice stuff. ABV is 8 % this year, and it was present and pleasant. This is pretty dark compared to the other bieres de garde that I have tried. It is very full flavored and a little bit sticky sweet. I probably should have taken a growler home.

On Tap at CBW. Pours very dark with some ruby highlights. Nice frothy off white head. Aroma of fruits. Flavors of raisins, toffee, chocolate, bready and other fruity notes I can’t hit on. Full bodied, chewy mouthfeel. Very nice, Alcohol wasn’t noticeable until the beer warmed up.

Sampled on tap at the brewery, served in a snifter glass. Appeared a dark, cloudy brown color with a foamy off-white head with good retention. Nice aroma of raisins, maybe some prunes, and a light hop background. Crisp fruity-bitter taste, with some sweetness. A dry but somewhat creamy beer, with a nice alcohol finish. Great seasonal selection, and the best of the beers I sampled on my visit.

Growler acquired in trade with lukin013 (thanks!). Poured a deeper amberish color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, toffee, caramel, light spices, and had a gerneric fruitiness. Tastes of chocolate, toffee, and dark fruits.

Glass from a growler provided by Hopdog. Pours a dark red body with a thin head. Aroma has a slighty melon tone with spices (honeydew?). Light mouth feel and slight alcohol burn. Sweet flavor.

Tasted at the CBW 12.12.08. I finally got to try some. Last year I missed the last of this beer by hours. Thus batch is 8% alcohol, opaque ruby caramel, off white head. Aroma is dried fruits, and some malty sweetness, hints of caramel. Flavor is tangy, but not tart, fruity, malty, doughy. Not super complex, but nicely blended.

Appearance is a dark brown murky color. Aroma mainly of spices and a hint of alcohol. Fruity and spicy flavor, but the alcohol comes through a bit too much. Also a bit thin.

Thanks to hopdog for breaking open this growler... Appears a transparent, copper toned amber with a medium white head that quickly fades out into a small film. Scattered streaks of lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of brown sugar, raisins, caramel, figs, yeast, breadiness, prunes, and a mild hopping. Taste is of figs, raisins, brown sugar, and sugary, yeasty bread. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sugary, along with light syrup, and yeasty bread.
