Commercial Description:
Our next stout in our rotating Blast Furnace Stout series is a Coconut Stout. I noticed in my three years here that our stout sales decline in the summer months. Most people don’t want to struggle with a nice thick stout in the summer months when they are looking to cool off. I however love a nice stout in the hot months, so I felt a compromise was in order. When I think of summer, three things pop into my mind: baseball, the 4th of July, and coconut. Alright, maybe coconut doesn’t make me think of summer but I like it and I’m in charge now so let’s see if we can shake things up a bit. This recipe is a twist on my Milk Stout that debuted back in November. It is the basic recipe for the Milk Stout except I added a considerable amount more chocolate malt and scaled back the roast barley. Also, I added some oats for everyone who misses our Oatmeal Stout. I also added twenty pounds of lactose into the boil. The coconut comes into play in the serving tank. I added twenty-five pounds of unsweetened coconut flakes into the serving tank. When the cooling jackets are turned on the oils from the flakes will mix with the brew giving the beer a subtle hint of coconut. When tasting this beer you will notice the chocolate malt up front on your tongue. This will give way to a subtle taste of coconut in the finish and in the back of your throat. With the addition of lactose you will also pick up a malty sweetness. The hop bill was kept low so that it would not overpower the sweetness and the coconut. I hope through this beer that everyone will think of coconut when they think of summer

This one poured a very dark brown color with a beige head. Aroma was of sweet fresh coconut milk and some roasted malts as well. Flavor started a bit roasted, but then became filled with almost overwhelming coconut flavor. Nice long lasting coconut aftertaste.

Draft @ Church Brew. Pours a dark chocolate-brown color; light tan head with decent lacing. Huge amounts of toasty coconut, peanuts, and creamy roasted malts in the aroma; really nice, interesting aroma. Relaxed carbonation. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy amounts of roasted malts, peanuts, touches of chocolate, and loads of coconut; comes off as an authentic, toasty, fresh coconut character; clear, tasty stout underneath. Lengthy finish: chocolate, creamy toasty malts, and coconut; slightly oily at the far end.

On tap at the Brew Works. A light stoutish aromathat attracts me to this brew. Black an opaque, can’t see any color tinge in this stuff. Does not seem to be as viscous as other sweet stouts. Has a thin tannish head. Taste is smooth and well behaved, tho I can’t taste any coconuts in there. Very little detectable carbonation. Earthly and roasty hints, farely mild and well mannered. I can enjoy this brew. Very little bitterness on the finish leaves me feeling happy. Very easy to enjoy and like. Could be my very first stout session brew, it is so smooth. Finally a good dark beer that is not overpowering. One of the better dark beers I have sampled. Would not hesitate to purchase again. Definattely the best CHurch Brew I have tasted by a long shot.

Cask conditioned. Dark brown, thin off white head. Aroma is chocolate, molasses, malt, anise, pine. Favor is chocolate, anise, slight coconut, coffee, toffee, wood. I also had the coconut stout on tap and that has a remarkable coconut flavor in contrast to the cask conditioned batch.

Draft, at Capone’s (Norristown, PA). Poured deep brown, topped with a ring of tan bubbles. Aroma of chocolate malt, vanilla, and light coconut. Flavor is somewhat sweet, with flavor of coconut milk, chocolate, vanilla, and roasted chocolate malt. Long finish, with coconut and ash flavor. Very Drinkable.

Cask-conditioned draught at the church. Pours dark brown / black with a moderate tan head. Aroma is sweet and lightly roasted malt, with bits of coffee and chocolate. Flavor is similar, with very little bitterness. Oddly I don’t detect any coconut. Velvety mouthfeel. A pretty good sweet stout, if a bit light.

Draft at Capone’s. Pours onyx with 1-finger creamy brown head. Nose is coconut meat, oil, blackstrap molasses, cacao, dark choc. Tastes patent malty, with coconut, moklasses, dark choc. Not terribly rich nor balanced, this one can be viewed as a decent sweet/novelty stout, but not a great stout overall IMHO.

On tap in the Church - Dark black pour with coconut on the nose, good head and lacing. Flavorful and mild but I’m not a fan of coconut in beer, that being said this was a good semi/sweet stout with a different twist.
