Commercial Description:
The Church Brew Works version is based on recipes similar to the Imperial Stouts of old. It is enormously full bodied with coffee and chocolate-like flavors dominating. You may also detect sherry and raisin in the aroma. The color is an opaque black, so don't even try to look through it. There are some complex fruity aromas, which blend with a full hop aroma and flavor. The alcohol is quite high, hence we are serving it in our 10 oz Specialty #3 glass. The Imperial Stout finishes long, rich and roasty with a balancing hop bitterness.

Draught at the Church. Jet black pour with no head. Rich, winey, plummy aroma with lots of raisin...very nice! Flavor is also winey and malty but with more noticeable roasted coffee and dark chocolate particularly on the finish. Smooth and full bodied palate. Alcohol is well hidden. Outstanding Imperial Stout!

(draft @ Church Brew Works - Pittsburgh, PA) Pitch black pour with no head and very light carbonation. Aroma is huge and full of whiskey, oak, and vanilla notes. Flavor is much the same. Sweet and roasty at the start with a very solid whiskey and vanilla finish. Oak is present throughout. Really, really nice.

Draft at the brewpub. Black with a chocolate brown head. Roasted malt aroma with some whiskey like sweetness. The flavor has dark chocolate and roast, with more whiskey and a touch of hops. Pretty good.

Snifter off of tap. Aroma of roast malt, dark chocolate, some whiskey. Midnight black, with a dark tan head. Huge flavor of whiskey aged oak, with lots of chocolate and sweet malts. Good beer from them, they are starting to get on quite the whiskey aged kick right now.

This was probably the best beer I’ve had from them. Aroma was nice. Strong roasted malt, black licorice with a hint of chocolate. Pour was perfect. Deep dark black with a thick and pillowy dark tan head. One of the best appearances I’ve ever seen. Taste was great also. Strong chocolate and burnt licorice but with a chocolatey aftertaste. This beer tastes like some of the big brewer’s EXCEPT for this off metallic aftertaste. It wasn’t strong enough to ruin the beer, but it hurt the score. Very nice.
