Commercial Description:
Many people are familiar with the pale ale variety called India Pale Ale a.k.a. IPA. This style was th originally brewed by the 19 century British brewers for export to their troops stationed in India. Since it had to survive the 6 month trip in the hold of a ship, it contained more alcohol and a lot more hops than a typical Pale Ale. Hops and alcohol helped to prevent spoilage that might have ruined a batch of this precious brew. The Thunder Hop IPA is Double IPA which is an emerging style created by hop heavy American brewers. It has intense bitterness, flavor and aroma. We chose to use 3 varieties of hops with almost 4 lbs of hops per barrel of beer!! The color is copper to amber, just a bit darker than the Pipe Organ Pale Ale. The aroma is noticeably hoppy from the Nuggets we used to dry hop. You will also pick up a complexity from fruit-like esters. The body is big and malty with some caramel sweetness. Details: Grain Used: Pale Malt, Munich, Caramel Malt, Flaked Barley Hops Used: Palisades, Glacier, Nugget Hop Bitterness: 90 IBU’s Approximate Alcohol: 8.5% ABV

Draft at the brewery. Smallish head over a dark orange pour. Nose is candied citrus, body follows with similar flavors and a sweeter caramel presence. Mouthfeel is somewhat awkward but there is good acidity and overall very drinkable. Hard to believe this is 90 ibus.

PPRBSG. Pours a thin head over a clean amber body. Aroma is herbal grassy hops, light dusty old citrus with some sharp orange peel. Fruity flavor- peachy and pear with grassy and light ctirsu hops ad a bigger malt backbone- carmael and toasted malts sweetness- minty green hoppiness in the end with a strange fruit juiciness and hints of cherry. Strange.

Light almost brown pour a medium head and lace. Rock candy and light medicine on the aroma. Caramel and piny hop finish. A bit thin and watery. A drinkable beer. I was surprised to find out it was 8.5 abv. That was hidden well.

Growler thanks to Eugene at PilsnerPeter’s Spring Gathering. Pours a clear light brown orange with a small beiged head. Smells of rubbing alcohol, and not really much hops. Nice carbonation, but ugh... nothing really happening here. Big bitterness, but unimpressive.
