Commercial Description:
Bolita was a type of lottery popular with the working class citizens of the Ybor City district of Tampa. Bolita means, ’little ball’ but profits from the illegal (and often rigged) game were anything but little. In the 1920’s Tampa native Charlie Wall was the undisputed kingpin of the Bolita racket.

Our Bolita is a Double Northern English-style brown ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee and hints of roasted nuts in the finish. Bolita pairs well with Baklava, Big Band Music, Cool Evenings and robust cigars.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted nuts, light roasted malt, caramel malt, and light fruits (apple, fig). Flavor has a nice smokey/oaky edge with roasted nuts, roasted malt, smoked apple, and maybe a touch of coffee. I like the smoked aspect of this beer, very tasty! Robust palate and creamy too (however it gets slightly wearing and a little acidic as you go through the beer). Overall, a brown ale I actually enjoyed. 7/4/8/4/14 [3.7/5]

750ml bottle, with a big thanks to dchmela for the awesome bonus! Pours a caramel brown with a good sized tan head and nice lacing. Aroma is nuts, caramel, toffee, light cola, and hints of vanilla and tobacco. Definitely more going on in the aroma than most browns. Flavor is mostly caramel, toffee, nut and chocolate, with a little tobacco on the finish. An easy drinking and enjoyable brown. Thanks again Dave!

Bottle. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, smoky chocolate, a very sugary caramel note, maybe a hint of cedar, and an odd acidic note, might be getting some acetaldehyde as well, though I’m no brewer/expert, so I could be mistaken. Flavor seems less off than the aroma with lots of roasted malt, a bit of saltiness, lots of those nuts, but that caramel, sort of like caramel drizzle, remains an off putting sweet note. Still has an odd lingering acidity on the palate. Had some good stuff going on, but something felt off to me the whole time. Maybe I’m way off base and I just wasn’t a big fan, but then it’s 6 of one, half dozen of the other anyway.

Bottle shared by mfielden on BA - thanks Mark! This beer has an incredible appearance, murky dark brown with an awesome lasting tan head that leaves some foam and great lacing. Aroma is nuts, smoke, chocolate, and maybe even a hint of bretty tartness. Flavor is awesome and keeps going for awhile after you drink it. Chocolate malt, toffee, nuts, and smoke. Palate is fairly light for the ABV, adding to the drinkability. You really don’t notice the 9% at all. This is a great beer.

This dark brown ale had an enticing aroma with very little head as we poured it for a small group tasting in Bellport last night. The big bodied ale appeared to be very dense in the glassware and the first taste further explained the commotion around its arrival in my area. It had a very enjoyable taste that one could pick out a variety of stronger ale notes, as the previous rater suggested. The dry chalky aftertaste also reminded me of cocoa bars and I thought a little Partagas cigar might go well with this ale.

Bottle shared by Turdlington at the CC gathering - thanks, Sam! Very handsome pour, almost like a big porter - the kind of robustness one isn’t accustomed to with a "nut brown ale." Smoky, nutty, and dry aroma is just the ticket. Nice big mouthfeel, and flavors of char, chocolate, and roasted nuts. Long papery finish works well. I’d like to try this one again.
