Commercial Description:
Bolita was a type of lottery popular with the working class citizens of the Ybor City district of Tampa. Bolita means, ’little ball’ but profits from the illegal (and often rigged) game were anything but little. In the 1920’s Tampa native Charlie Wall was the undisputed kingpin of the Bolita racket.

Our Bolita is a Double Northern English-style brown ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee and hints of roasted nuts in the finish. Bolita pairs well with Baklava, Big Band Music, Cool Evenings and robust cigars.

In short: Refried-beans and nutty brown ale on steroids. A weird but not unpleasant mess
How: Bottle 750ml. Consumed when about 4 months old.
The look: Mahogany body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Nose of refried beans with some nuts and rubber. Not really an inviting aroma. Body is full, creamy, heavy and very pleasant with a medium carbonation. Fortunately the taste has a little less refried beans than the aroma but it’s still there. Plenty of hazelnuts, milk chocolate, maple syrup, earth, french fries (no kidding!), toffee, leather. tar. The beer also felt very hoppy but I could not really discern the hops character, other than “it feels hoppy”. This beer is a real mess but somehow it is a mess that was so out-there that I finished my 750ml with no problem. Named after a old bidding game with numbered balls that was popular many years ago. 80 years later we now have Bingo and it seems to me like it’s the same people playing.

750 ml bottle courtesy of either Beerlando or fishingnet. Thanks, guys! Pours a nice opaque brown with reddish brown edges and some lighter brightness, a brownish tan head, brighter, big that cakes and laces ok. Aromas are a bit fruity right off, with big toffee and toasted malts beneath, nut and caramel come on fairly strong, a touch buttery, with some dark fruity notes, I can’t really smell funk but but I do get a bit of a Guava Grove vibe, which I feared. Initial is not really funky, happily. Big caramel and toffee malts, toast and nut, decent sweetness, a decent bitterness towards the backend, chocolate and tobacco shine through and coat the palate a bit, fairly bitter finish. The funkiness grows a little in the nose, but not really in the beer. Unblemished, this beer would have been a winner. However the funk muttles it up and makes it a bit awkward. The cocoa, tobacco, caramel, and nut is quite flavorful in the actual beer though, works well together, a touch of vanilla but very tobacco infused. Flavors grow stronger further in. Could do some really cool things I think. Not bad.

bottle poured a rich brown in color with a thick sticky one finger brown head that retained a beautiful covering. aroma has earthy brown malt, nuts, dark fruit, chocolate, and light sour cherry. mouth feel is hefty medium and gets a little chewy. flavor has a dark brown malt base, some bitterness, dark chocolate, coffee, and a bit of light sour cherry funk. the bugs have gotten into this bottle a bit but it worked out nicely and gives a nice drying finish.quite tasty.

Bottle courtesy of changeup45...THANKS GARRY!!! Muddy river water pour produces a massive 3-finger chestnut head that leaves significant lacing. Aroma is cocoa, brown sugar, and almond. Bold flavor profile with aggressive roasted malt, toffee, and maple syrup. Medium mouthfeel. Darn good beer.

Hazy brown with a tan head. earthy nutty chocolate aromas. Frothy mouthfeel. Decent flavors are nutty brown malts and mild chocolate, with a gaseous infected carbonation burp to finish. Mild infection here. Thanks Juice for this bottle
