GAManiac (1141), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 14, 2009 750mL bottle, #112/204, poured into a tulip.
Pours a dark reddish brown with very little light penetrating underneath a small creamy tan head that recedes slowly leaving some legs on the sides.
The aroma is sweet with caramel malts and lots of dark fruit - raisins and plums especially. There is also some molasses and dark chocolate as well as hints of smoked peat.
The taste is excellent and just a bigger, bolder version of the nose. The initial taste is of dark roasted malts and chocolate with some sweet molasses in the background. The finish has a subtle bourbon character with some vanilla sweetness and a dry, woody character. The smoked peat doesn’t seem to be as prevalent, but the more I sip, the more the peat shows up.
The mouthfeel is meidium to full bodied with soft carbonation and a booze soaked dessert-like feel overall.
This is another excellent beer from CCB and a wonderful evening sipper with the bourbon adding just the right amount of complexity to the already-solid underlying beers. Fantastic. mcbackus (738), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Nov 6, 2009 Bottle 46/204: pours a dark brown some amber hues come through also small tan head with some lacing. Aroma is great full of all different smells rich malts some very good barrell and great hints of vanilla very slight roast great balance of aromas flavor is very full and lively great rich malts and a good hint of alcohol some of the wood comes through. Very enjoyable and great. Teege (75), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 30, 2009 Bottle thanks to Ashley and Brent. Lots of hot Buffalo Trace bourbon in the nose. Some rich caramel and toffee. Not what I’d call smoky, but I do get hints of bacon in the back. A very complex though easy to drink flavor. Roasted malts, a lot of Big Sound. That perhaps overwhelms the other flavors, but it is still very good. iowaherkeye (1844), Bakersfield, California, USA Oct 22, 2009 Updated: Oct 23, 2009750mL bottle, blue waxed from darkguardian. Clear brown with a smallbeige head, fading to a ring before long. Nose is of sweet bourbon and caramel with some toasted malts and chocolate behind. Flavor is much the same with a little bit of roast and a fair amount of spicy alcohol, bitterness peaking @ a 3. Full body with moderate carbonation. Good use of BAing--unlike some of their other offerings. That said, this is tasty, but doesn’t quite mesh together, thus the 4.0 rating. I also liked the little piece of charcoal in my bottle! ThirstyBird (3), Providence, Rhode Island, USA does not count Oct 20, 2009 Thanks to tertons for sharing!!
Tan head goes to a ring. Cloudy brown in color.
Sweet rich malt, caramel, oak. A little bitterness.
Huge caramel up front. Some dark fruit fills in afterward. Smells a touch boozy bourbon. Maybe some coconut.
Carbonation is active, maybe a touch light. very fine which makes this brew super silky. It is the perfect carbonation level for this beer in my opinion. The beer feel medium to med/full in body.
This is a great sipping beer. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to try my first Cigar City beer - Thanks Nelson!! robinvboyer (1424), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Oct 16, 2009 Wicked aroma of oak, vanilla, roasted malt, piney hops, cocoa, and caramel. Flavor is dominated by oaky vanilla caramel malt, and sweet cocoa. very complex beer, super tatsty, and a great sipping beer. The finish is slightly sweet, with a caramel, cocoa, vanilla oak aftertaste with a slight bitterness. juiceisloose (661), Windermere, Florida, USA Oct 9, 2009 750 ml bottle courtesy hopscotch. Pours a dark mahogany color topped a by thin layer of tan bubbles that settles quickly to a thin film. Some small spots of lacing cling to the glass. The aroma is really nice of rich caramel, dark cocoa, and soft oak which imparts vanilla and maple. The bourbon is subdued which really helps the other character to come through. The flavor follows and is perfectly blended with sweet caramel and dark cocoa malts to go with the oak laden vanilla and burnt wood. There is a nice roasty undertone from the imperial stout and blends perfectly with the touch of smokey flavors. The bourbon seems to tie it all together, but never dominates any of the flavors. Medium to full bodied, but thinned a bit from the barrel with perfect carbonation and almost no heat from the alcohol. This one drinks really smooth all the way to the sweet, bourbon finish. The Buffalo Trace barrel was perfect for this blend as the bourbon wasn’t too strong at all and added great depth of flavors. Just an awesome beer, and my favorite so far of the barrel aged beers from Cigar City. JK (2949), Richfield, Minnesota, USA Oct 7, 2009 No doubt the bottle is pretty. Bourbon in the aroma, with brown sugar. I am sensitive to bourbon, and if it isn’t in the perfect amount, with high quality, I usually won’t like it. Sweet flavor, and more bourbon. It is balanced, and has sort of a Belgian quality to it. One of the better beers I tried from Cigar City, and considering the bourbon, that is saying something.
