Commercial Description:
Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

32 oz brown medicine bottle growler. Courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Poured out a deep reddish copper color, with a sticky tan head. Aromas are caramel malts, piney hops, some grapefruit rind as well. Flavors are sweet malts, piney hops, caramel candy. Medium mouthfeel, decent body. Even carbonation, hoppy finish. Alcohol is fairly well hidden. Decent IPA overall.

Hazy amber color; beautiful creamy head; nice lace. Very nice aroma, fruity and resiny; light bubble-gum, citrusy; very light cheese. Good body and good mix of malt and toffee flavor; surely bitter, with some of the bitterness coming from bitter oranges, and resins; it’s as well creamy. Long final, with light alcohol impression too. Very good.

Clear copper with a good head. Slightly floral hops. The bitterness really isn’t that strong for the style.

Tap at Capone’s. Pours out a mostly clear light copper color with a decent white head. Aroma is of citrus and floral hops and a nice sweet caramel malt note making its way in there also. Taste is complex and very well balanced, citrus hops take center stage, floral notes also make an appearance and there is a nice ever-present caramel malt note in there too. Very well balanced in my opinion because at no point did the malty notes overtake the hops.

Handbottled. Thx to lbrew2or3. Amber coloured. Unclear. Dense light brown lasting head. Aroma of pine, flowers, caramel, light sweetness, spice. Flavour of pine and flowers. Spice caramel and grass notable. Medium to full bodied. Smooth and balanced. Dry. Dense bitterness in the end, which is countered remarkably well by a subtle sweeetness. Very nice.

Handbottled. A dark amber beer with a thin lazing beige head. The aroma has strong notes of citrusy hops, caramel, and malt. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of malt, grapefruit, caramel, and hops, leading to a very bitter finish. Nice. Thanks a lot MadsBerg for sharing.

Hand bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of madsberg. Pours a clear amber with a creamy and lacing off-white head. Fresh and piney hop aroma. Medium body, sweet malts, caramel and fruit. Solid hop bite in the finish with evident alcohol. A very solid IPA. 161209

On draft at Teresa’s. Poured copper with splotches of off-white head. Faint piney nose. Awesome balance in this one between malts and hops. A bit chewy while still offering a peculiar citrus bite. This one stands out even after all the IPAs I’ve been through...very unique.
