hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 5, 2009 On tap at Capones. Poured a deep and dark amberish/brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, nutty, some roastiness, and chocolate. Tates of the same toasted nuts, caramel, and chocolate. Alcohol content well hidden. dmac (1414), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Nov 5, 2009 Draft from Capones. Poured a beautiful looking deep dark burnt orange/brown with a large super long lasting creamy beige head. Aroma was malty with some chocolate and grain notes but a little on the weak side. The flavor was similarly weak and the body was a little to thin. This one was a bit of a let down. MrBendo (1039), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Nov 5, 2009 Updated: Nov 6, 2009On tap at Capone’s. Ruby-brown color with some great lacing. Aroma of chocolate and molasses, sweet nuts and cereal. Rich and heavy for a brown and I can see why it is Cigar City’s base beer for so much experimentation. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 5, 2009 In short: A bold big hoppy brown ale. A chaotic but entertaining mix of flavours
How: Tap at David Copperfield, NYC
The look: Redish-brown body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Nose has a lot of resinous and citrusy hops blending in with the nutty sweet malts. That thing is so unusually hoppy for the style that I’m hoping the waiter didn’t serve me the wrong thing. Taste is like a cross between an IPA and a brown ale on steroids. Nuts, caramel, citrus fruits, tobaccos leaves, hops resin, toffee, toasted bread crust, plywood, more… Very bitter. Not really cohesive but quite entertaining. This beer is everything but boring, it throws so much stuff at you that my tongue felt like it was George W Bush giving a speech in a Muslim shoe factory. TomDecapolis (3122), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 5, 2009 Tap at Capones. Pours a deep brown with a medium creamy off white head that laced. Aroma of toasted malt, molasses, nuts, caramel and toffee. Flavor had a lot of the same toasted malt, nuts, light chocolate and molasses along with some caramel going on. Great Brown Ale, didn’t realize it was 9%. michael-pollack (2598), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 4, 2009 750ml Bottle: Aroma of chocolate, cocoa, light cream, nuts, light malts, slight brown sugar, and a tiny of hint of roasting. Poured brown/slight ruby in color with a medium-sized, creamy, tan/light brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Opaque. Slightly sparkling. Full of small particles throughout. Good lacing. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of malts, chocolate, cocoa, light toffee, slight roasting, light nuts, and a hint of tobacco. Medium to full body. Lightly syrupy, slightly dry texture. Soft to average carbonation. Chocolate, malt, cocoa, toffee, and nut finish is slightly dry. 9%ABV is totally hidden. DerWeg (748), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 28, 2009 Earthy mushroomy hoppy, fruit over traditional brown ale nutty roast malts. I would need several to assuage my perplexity. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Oct 19, 2009 Pours a smoky brown color with a small off white head. Smells very nutty with a mix of dark fruit, caramel, and hints of smoke in there too. The flavor is very nutty with a nice chocolate finish and a fruity undertone. Very easy drinking and very flavorful brown ale. The nuttiness of it I ove in browns and this had plenty of it. Quite good.
