Medium tan head. Nose is flowery and laden with hints of dark fruits (prunes?) and light spice notes.Taste is sweeter than the aroma would let on. | 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jul 28, 2004 Updated: Aug 7, 2004(on bottle) After having the blond, the bruin was kind of a low. The aroma is vague to say it nicely and wildly turned in the glass, it only produces some heavy hazel and a hint of alcohol. The color is very nice ´n ruby-brown. Caramel and light chocolate in the finish, but still, weak as a bruin. JorisPPattyn (5192), Antwerpen, Belgium
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jul 12, 2004 Yellowish-brown, irregular head; dark red-chestnut brown ale. Bready nose, more like a German Bock than a Belgian beer. Sweet taste, "speculoos" (kind of Belgian shortbread), going over into bready flavour again. Roasted dark malts, fresh tasting. Medium to full bodied, some alcohol, but blending in. Generally speaking sweet, but infinitely better than the blonde version. It’s definitely defendable. Boutip (2390), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 30, 2004 Bottle drank at le Cirio in Brussels: Poured a dark opaque brown colored beer with a nice head with better then average retention. Aroma is a mix of roasted malt and some slight notes of sweetness. Taste is very refreshing with again notes of roasted malt and candi sugar hitting my palate. I would have expected a bit more complexity from this beer to go from good to great. Overall, this is not a bad dubbel but maybe lacking a bit of character.
