Commercial Description:
Created to celebrate Clipper City’s 10th Anniversary – extremely limited and vintage dated – this extravagantly malty barley wine will show well upon release but continue to evolve for years.

2008-12-22. Dark amber-brown body with a modest tan head. Mild aroma is a bit muted, sweet alcoholic caramel. Flavour is relatively restrained, sweet malt caramel swamped by warming alcohol. Smooth average plus body. (3+). Very drinkable, accessible barley wine. Bit restrained, but rather nice. Bottle c/o Tupalev

My first experience at a barley wine. Very fruity kind of scent with a smooth taste to it. Nicely done baltimore

Pours deep amber into a snifter. Off-white head recedes to nothing; leaving no lacing. Spicy caramel aromas. Spritzy caramel syrup upfront turning into a hoppy alcohol burn. Interesting.

Bottle of the 2008. Candied fruit and caramel aroma. Flavor comes through mostly as crystallized sugar pineapple. Just a hint of coconut too. Comes across a bit like a caramelly pina colada. Pretty good.

Bottle. Pours a light brown with just a few small bubbles drifting around. Aromas are heavy fruit -strawberries of all odd things- and caramel/brown sugar. Mouthfeel is kind of fizzy (but there is not a lot of carbonation so it might just be the slightly abrasive alcohol.) Flavor is heavy alcohol with some brown sugar, fig, and more alcohol. Maybe a touch of those strawberries and some metal from time to time. If nothing else, it packs a punch.

A sweet, malty aroma invites further exploration. The pour reveals light carbonation and a clear dark amber color. The flavor likewise is malty with brown sugar and an earthy hop throat. The finish is quite clean with some alcohol burn. This is not my first choice in barleywine-style ales, but decent.

Vintage 2006. Rust colored, little head, some floaty yeast in the mix (rough pour from me?). This is a bit on the sweet side, with molasses and brown sugar plus fruit and licorice to boot. The hops are English, so no citrus, pine or anything like that. Nice light carbonation, but not as thick as others. Some alcohol burn.

Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of dark bread, caramel and roasted, light to moderate smells of orange for the hops, and leather for the yeast, with date alcohol and faint spice in the background. Head is large, frothy, off-white with excellent lacing and is mostly lasting. The body itself cling well to the glass. Color is clear brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately bittersweet. Palate is medium to full, creamy and has a soft almost flat carbonation. It finishes lightly dry and astringent. A nice, well rounded Barley Wine, reminded me of holiday candy.
