Lots of carmel and berries, and some toasted coconut. Some pineapple juice and Belgian Candi sugar, with some heavy toasted malt. On the upside it was probably the first barleywine I’ve liked in a long time, avoiding all that licorice and over-alcohol-ed flavors, but on the downside, it didn’t really seeeeem like a barleywine.

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 28, 2009 Sampled on cask at Churchkey, Washington D.C. Served in a snifter. Pours a translucent, nearly opaque, copper, nut brown with a thin, spitty, clumpy, slightly off white head. Nose is malty, bready, with some apples and pears. Not a lot of citrus in the nose. Flavor is sweet, sticky fruits, some caramel, some toasted grains, a little bread. Finish is a little salty, a little sticky sweet. Finish is what I like, could have used a bit more complexity overall though. WabashMan (817), Noblesville, Indiana, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 19, 2009 I’m not aware of ever having had a barley wine that was so mild in temperament. The flavors are subdued in both the mouth and nose, surprisingly, and even the high ABV doesn’t make much impact. tgncc (845), Bellmore, New York, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 18, 2009 On cask @ Blind Tiger NYC. The Arfoma was weak, but typical to the style, malty, fruity. The appearance was a deep red brown, almost no head. The flavor is sweet fruit, with slight metal, and a vegetable quality. Strange. I can’t tell if this batch is infected, or this beer is just truly bad. Thefininsh is just like the flavor, with a slight hop bittering. The mouthfeel was a little thin for a Barley Wine. Normally, I love Barley Wines. Here is an exception. This is mediocre at best. tastybeer (139), Washington DC, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark red/brown with a nice creamy head. Taste is sweet, maple syrup, blueberries, very little alcohol. Rather boring for a barleywine but very drinkable. tarheels86 (813), Washington DC, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 10, 2009 355mL into snifter. Pours a reddish, deep, clear amber with a thin tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Aroma is pretty much blueberry muffin, blueberry pancakes, blueberry pie. There are some copper, rusty notes in there too. Ugh. Taste is creamy, rich, sweet with maple syrup drizzled over buttery pancakes. This is pretty damn good. Masks the 11% remarkably well. Taste after awhile becomes a bit watery, grainy, simplistic, Absent is the super rich caramel and spicy hops I’m used to in barleywines. Still, it is a great dessert beer. Should be paired with hot blueberry cobbler. dnstone (280), Mons, Belgium

Pours a clear caramel brown color with prominent ruby highlights. Half a finger head of thin foam. Minimal retention and very little lacing.
Good malt presence, though not really hefty. A little nuttiness and some fruity hints. A slight touch of hops bitterness.
Burnt caramel and brown sugar. Dark molasses. Fruity sweetness. Cherries, grapes, peaches and light notes of pineapple. Nice hint of chocolate. Good amount of spice in the finish.
Malty and sweet, but not overpowering, at all. Very good balance, overall.
An unusual barleywine, to me, at least. Hops are very subdued. Malts are mostly deep down, underneath the fruity flavors. Very interesting.
Mouthfeel is nice and thick. Minimal carbonation level, yet it somehow retains a very nice creaminess.
Between the slight sweetness and the 10%ABV, which is very well masked, BTW, this would be hard to put down more than a couple in a sitting. Very good flavor, but it would lay you out, if you gave it the chance.
