Commercial Description:
Big DIPA – Double IPA
Hops: Centennial, Amarillo
Malts: American 2-Row, Crystal, Biscuit
ABV: 10.6%
IBU: 75.5%

Big DIPA – Double IPA, is the first in the Heavy Seas Special Edition Series due to be released in mid June. Hopped 3 times in the brewing process, Big DIPA has an earthy hop aroma. In keeping with the Heavy Seas philosophy we’ve made a big beer with a surprising balance. The best part is that you’ll hardly notice it’s 10.6% ABV (est). The label artwork was created by Kurt Krol, one of our brewers who also helped to develop the recipe.

Bottle from SL, grabbed by my dad to hand off to me. So, we had it together. The pour was full amber, nice intial white colored head, solid lacing all the way down. The aroma was rich full earthy citrus and piney hops. The flavor followed exactly, some good malt base, although it wasn’t really caramel-like, more bready and earthy. The body was full, pretty darned good IPA, a tad short of a big dIPA, despite the suprisingly 10% ABV presence it states is in the bottle. Really, 10? Not buying it.

2009-08-01. Dark amber body with a modest beige head. (3+) Resiny aroma, light leafy touches, mild alcohol. Flavour is similar, resiny touches of leafy green hops, muted citrus. (7+) Average plus bodied palate. Simple but solid DIPA. Bottle at BCTC 2009

Pours a dark amber, cloudy, with a small white head. Aroma of glazed doughnut, toffee, and caramel malt- surprisingly low on hop character; bit of a floral idea, and some briny notes. Flavor has much more hop that overwhelms the malt from the aroma. Definite prickly mouthfeel, but burnt sugars help to balance the bitterness. Really quite a solid brew.

Pures amber with a nice white to cream head. Head returns with every drink. This beer coats your palate and will stand up to a cigar. The flavor screams with hops and sweet grapefruit long after the glass is empty. over all this is a graet beer for someone who has a complex palate.

Bottle… Pours clear and orange with a mid-sized, fluffy, white head. Fantastic, small, tight retention. The aroma provides some nice caramel and toffee notes alongside resin and sweaty socks. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Well-balanced. Lots of caramel and crystal malt sweetness up front, but the hop bitterness catches up in a hurry. The finish is lengthy and bittersweet… the bitterness lingers longer. Bottle provided by ygtbsm94!

Great IIPA that’s about as full bodied as any beer I’ve ever had. Thick and oily, and the hops are equally balanced with syrupy malts. Nice citrus hops in this one, grapefruit and bitter citrus. Very good beer.
