Commercial Description:
Big DIPA – Double IPA
Hops: Centennial, Amarillo
Malts: American 2-Row, Crystal, Biscuit
ABV: 10.6%
IBU: 75.5%

Big DIPA – Double IPA, is the first in the Heavy Seas Special Edition Series due to be released in mid June. Hopped 3 times in the brewing process, Big DIPA has an earthy hop aroma. In keeping with the Heavy Seas philosophy we’ve made a big beer with a surprising balance. The best part is that you’ll hardly notice it’s 10.6% ABV (est). The label artwork was created by Kurt Krol, one of our brewers who also helped to develop the recipe.

Dark amber pour with a small off-white head. Big hops aroma and some spice. Flavor is bitter but drinkable and the high ABV is well hidden. Excellent stuff.

On Tap at Shallo’s. 10.6% definitely hides itself. Pours slight red, mostly orange. Aroma is amazingly fresh, citrus orange, pine grapefruit hops. i want to eat them. Next best thing is tasting this brew! Flavors of fresh, juicy citrus cocktail. Earthy hops and smooth malt character come together to produce one top notch DIPA. Get this one while you can....what a treat!

poured dark amber with no reAL head but lacing that lasted the whole beer. smells grassy, hoppy, and sweet. taste is about the same with a little alcohol at the end. but nothing special. only thing worth noting is the good balance between the sweetness and the alcohol.

Bottle 22oz . A clear copper color pour with as thick foamy ,lasting light tan head , medium to high carbonation . Loads of lacing left all the way down the glass. A slightly grainy aroma , candy sugar , pine, and pineapple notes , slight alcohol in the nose as it warms . Flavor is quite malty , a nice sweetness up front with some spicy ,earthy, floral hoppy notes . Not as bitter as expected , but nicely balanced . The high ABV is well hidden in the taste . Full body with a sticky mouthfeel . Very drinkable and a tasty brew but slightly overpriced to buy very often , a very good try though .

Pours deep coppery toward orangy brown with 2-finger off-white head. Nose is huge piney hops, caramel malt, mango, tangerine. Tastes rich, heavily malty with a huge hop bill, tangerine, peppery spice, and brown sugary notes. The recipe here reminds me a little of a toned down Oggi’s Hop Whompus. This is a very good, and very under-appreciated, IIPA.

Bottle. Thanks to Tmoney99 at NATIFEST ’09. Pours a nice amber with a nice white head. Aroma is heavy with grassy malts hops and citrus hops, along with sweet malt. Notes of pineapple and other tropical fruit come out. On the palate, it is a bit watered down. The flavor is about the same as the aroma, but weaker. The finish does have a nice bitter bite and leaves an alcohol burn. I enjoyed this beer, but I think it is missing something that could make it great.

22oz. bottle haven’t heard from these guys in a long time. clear amber under a small off-white head. aroma of lychee, melon, citrus, lemon, and sweet bready malt. flavor is hoppy with lychee fruit and melons. medium bodied and smooth for 10.6%. a bit sweet but overall not bad. i need to revisit the loose cannon again.

bottle courtesy of ygtbsm94. nice pour with minimal head that resides as a ring throughout the glass. nice sugar pine aroma. very deep but crisp dark amber appearance. taste has a sweet start that lasts the whole way through, but is nicely balanced in the mid palate by the bitterness of the hops for a perfect combo. has a noticable alcohol finish, but the syrupy sweet residue of the hops helps hide it. overall a nice iipa, worth a try.
