Commercial Description:
Big DIPA – Double IPA
Hops: Centennial, Amarillo
Malts: American 2-Row, Crystal, Biscuit
ABV: 10.6%
IBU: 75.5%

Big DIPA – Double IPA, is the first in the Heavy Seas Special Edition Series due to be released in mid June. Hopped 3 times in the brewing process, Big DIPA has an earthy hop aroma. In keeping with the Heavy Seas philosophy we’ve made a big beer with a surprising balance. The best part is that you’ll hardly notice it’s 10.6% ABV (est). The label artwork was created by Kurt Krol, one of our brewers who also helped to develop the recipe.

22 oz bomber - pours a hazy orange with a thick off-white head and lots of lacing. Aroma of citrus, pine, hops and malt. Hoppy, malty taste with grapefruit, pine resin and plenty of sweetness and alcohol. Very tasty Double IPA.

22oz bottle shared with my buddy Ian. Pours a hazy dark orange with a big off white head. Huge pine orange aroma, very hoppy and resinous. Big malt body with lots of sweetness, orange and bitter hoppiness. Good DIPA, just seems to be missing something.

Very cloudy golden brown, thin beige head. Smells like caramel and pine and a wee bit of honey. Very sweet aroma,. Flavor is more sweet, with a big piney, resiny hop finish. Very thick, and it become almost but not quite too sweet as it warms.

Pours a hazy deep orange color with a small off-white head. Aroma is big pine and caramel, a little citrus. Flavor is not quite as hoppy as I expected. Really big malt character, but I’m not sure if the hopcharacter is quite up to the challenge.

Glass:Tripel Karmeliet tulip.
Appearance:Hazy orange pour with a finger and a half of off white head.
Aroma:Grapefruit, caramel and pine.
Flavor:Solid malt base with a sticky citrus finish.
Palate:Medium/full body with solid carbonation.
Overall:This needed more, but was still pretty good.

Tap at GABF ’09.
Pours an average amber with a thin body. Aroma is malty corn biscuit. Flavor is malty vegetable dough with a hops finish. Slick mouthfeel that coats the tongue nicely. Aaargh, matey, this one should walk the plank; too malty for me.

Bomber. Pours a mostly clear, dark amber-orange color topped by a thick and foamy light tan colored head. The head settles quickly to a thin film leaving some rings of lace around the glass. The aroma shows huge amounts of sweet toffee malts and a good dose of citrus and floral hops. There is a hint of the booze in there also. The flavor follows suit with the sweet toffee malt up front followed by the citrus and floral hop bitterness. The boozy alcohol comes through more as the beer warms up. Pretty good flavor when drank completely cold, but when the beer warmed up became too sugary and boozy from the alcohol. The mouthfeel is big and syrupy with good carbonation that leads to a bitter sweet finish. The hops were really overpowered in this one by the sweet malt profile and amount of alcohol. Not a bad ipa, but not one I would revisit if looking for a hop fix.

The bitterness is a little thin and on the verge of unpleasant in the back. The malt flavor is nice, but it’s thinner than expected in that area. This is not the best of the Heavy Seas series that I’ve had from Clipper.
