Commercial Description:
Big DIPA – Double IPA
Hops: Centennial, Amarillo
Malts: American 2-Row, Crystal, Biscuit
ABV: 10.6%
IBU: 75.5%

Big DIPA – Double IPA, is the first in the Heavy Seas Special Edition Series due to be released in mid June. Hopped 3 times in the brewing process, Big DIPA has an earthy hop aroma. In keeping with the Heavy Seas philosophy we’ve made a big beer with a surprising balance. The best part is that you’ll hardly notice it’s 10.6% ABV (est). The label artwork was created by Kurt Krol, one of our brewers who also helped to develop the recipe.

Bottle. Poured a golden amber color with a medium sized off white head. Aroma is malt, grain, caramel, toffee, and pineapple. Medium bodied with a smooth mouth feel. Flavor like the aroma is off to me, lots of sweet malt, caramel, and toffee. It’s also bready with a mild alcohol burn. The hops don’t stand out to me it is a sweet unbalanced brew with some strange flavors I can’t put my finger on. Finish is mildly better.

Harsh at first on the initial sips. I thought to myself, how am i gonna fight through this? Thankfully though it smoothed out and actually turned into a really good drinker. Packs one helluva punch. Would like to try again, especially for only $5.99!

Appearance is amber with a thin white head. Aroma is hops with slight fruitiness. Flavor is strong hops and a little sweet in the finish. Fairly strong malt backbone and somewhat bitter aftertaste. A fairly decent IIPA, but there are many others that are better.

Bottle from the TBS, thanks matt. Nice orange color, decent head. Aroma of fruity hops. Light citrus taste with some fruits as well. A little sweet maltness in there. Texture is medium. Would of never guessed it to be over ten percent. Overall not bad, but not a standout...

22oz - Sweet aroma of caramel followed by resinous pine hops and alcohol. Flavor is chewy with sticky resin hops and caramel malt that balances nicely. Palate is sticky and tart. A tasty and very drinkable 10.6%.

Medium orange, clear, touch of amber, good head. Aroma is caramel malts and cooked citrus hops. Flavor matches, with a clear alcohol note that isn’t entirely pleasant. In the end, I get cloying sweetness, baked grapefruit, alcohol heat, and a bit of bitterness. Not my favorite take on the style. Lauren, on the other hand, made a game try to sample some herself.
