Commercial Description:
Big DIPA – Double IPA
Hops: Centennial, Amarillo
Malts: American 2-Row, Crystal, Biscuit
ABV: 10.6%
IBU: 75.5%

Big DIPA – Double IPA, is the first in the Heavy Seas Special Edition Series due to be released in mid June. Hopped 3 times in the brewing process, Big DIPA has an earthy hop aroma. In keeping with the Heavy Seas philosophy we’ve made a big beer with a surprising balance. The best part is that you’ll hardly notice it’s 10.6% ABV (est). The label artwork was created by Kurt Krol, one of our brewers who also helped to develop the recipe.

Bomber. Light haze on the deep orange-copper body. Creamy lasting half-inch of foam above. Nose of earthy caramel, tea leaf, chocolate and toasted nut. Flavor is orange-cream with Baby Ruth chased by a resin-citrus and whiskey finish. Medium body is smoothly carbonated and just a bit sticky, but well-dried. Excellent brew; probably would fare better in the American Strong category for the sticklers.

22 oz bomber - Wow! It’s very nicely hoppy as hoped for, but what’s different in a good way is it seems heavy on flavor hops and aroma hops, while less heavy on the bittering. Still a strong bitter ale, the flavor is fully revealed with less punch in the mouth; although at 10.6 ABV, you still may feel stunned. The alcohol is definately there, but is balanced well between the heavy orange amber malt, the heavy hops, and a light caramel taste that lingers as you contemplate your last and next sips. It’s a sipping D-IPA for sure. Maybe I’ll call it the Big Sippa. Thanks Clipper City!

Draft – RFD (Savor Sample Night). Dark amber, off white creamy head (great lacing). Intense sweet pine and melon aromas warm to swirls of citrus and earthed toffee. Powerful hop flavors of sprucey pine and syrupy pineapple-melon tones balance well on a soft sweet chewy malt backbone. Full bodied and smooth, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Think a cross between Hop Stoopid and Hog Heaven (when fresh). A fantastic Southern California style hop monster without a doubt. Congrats to Hugh, Kurt, and crew for pulling this off. I look forward to the 22’s , but this right here could easily be a year-round hit in 6 pack format. **Re-rate on 7/10/09 - 22 oz. Bottled version - 7464 13. Quite unfortuante as this bottle version was not even close to what I experienced on draft.

On Tap at Shallo’s. 10.6% definitely hides itself. Pours slight red, mostly orange. Aroma is amazingly fresh, citrus orange, pine grapefruit hops. i want to eat them. Next best thing is tasting this brew! Flavors of fresh, juicy citrus cocktail. Earthy hops and smooth malt character come together to produce one top notch DIPA. Get this one while you can....what a treat!

bomber.... pours a deep orange with a 1-2 finger white fluffy head... some citrus and pine hop aromas blended together... medium body with a soft cream like texture on the sides... some citrus, banana and soothing bitterness throughout... nice strong finish with a splash of alcohol through the bitter finish across the back of the mouth. nice IIPA... big, smooth and bitter...

22oz bottle pours medium copper with a cream color head that fades quickly. Alot of caramel and and sugar in the aroma with a bit of citrus and floral hops too. A little sticky with the first sip. Alot of sweetness and malty body. The bitterness and hops are not until the end. Not aggressively hopped like some DIPA’s. Good beer guys.

Hazed orangish amber with a medium taupe head, slowly dissipating and wisps of lace along the side of the glass. Aroma of citrus, grapefruit, resinous hops, caramel, a touch of bread, every effing appetizing. Flavors didn’t let me down. Citrus hops and caramel in a perfect DIPA balance with resinous hops, fruit, alcohol, orange and sweet malt. Nice mix of sweet and bitter with some orange on the finish and moderate bitterness and alcohol too. Excellent throughout. Take the arc to Arturus, the spike to Spica and tile the glass back and enjoy!
