This goes down as the biggest disappointment of 2009 thus far. My main beef with the beer is that on first sip it tasted stinkingly similar to their barleywine Below Decks that it lead me to believe that it is the same beer sans Magnum, Fuggles, and Goldings hops. The beer is super sweet and sticky on the lips like maple syrup. The dose of American hops is too low to even consider this anything more than an ordinary barleywine with an American hop accent. I was looking forward to this beer and I hope that Clipper City goes back to the drawing board and crafts something up that is to style and original. I.E. Not Below Decks masquerading as a DIPA. Perhaps something dry and hoppy please. This is a dessert beer, so I think labeling it a DIPA is misleading to the customer who is looking for a DIPA.

Dec 21, 2009 Bottle: Amberish, slight haze, moderate to large foamy white head, so-so lacing. Sweet citrusy hop nose, caramel malts, slight fire. Fairly juicy on the tongue, bitter yet mainly the citrus peel sweetness. Good malt base. Not real big, but it has enough malt to carry it. Yep, this one is really juicy that is for sure. Moderate to full body and mouthfeel. Lingering citrusy hoppy sweetness. A little sticky. I like that its not just overly hoppy but instead has a good sweet malt base. Thanks Rob!

Dec 17, 2009 Hazed orangish amber with a medium taupe head, slowly dissipating and wisps of lace along the side of the glass. Aroma of citrus, grapefruit, resinous hops, caramel, a touch of bread, every effing appetizing. Flavors didn’t let me down. Citrus hops and caramel in a perfect DIPA balance with resinous hops, fruit, alcohol, orange and sweet malt. Nice mix of sweet and bitter with some orange on the finish and moderate bitterness and alcohol too. Excellent throughout. Take the arc to Arturus, the spike to Spica and tile the glass back and enjoy!

Dec 16, 2009 On tap at the High Street grill in Mount Holly NJ. Nice amber pour with a small creamy head. Aroma of sweet dried fruit, malt and hops. Very well balanced flavor with the sweetness up front and a light hop presence in the background. Dry clean finish. Good one.

Nov 16, 2009 THOUGHTS: A little more like a barley wine than a DIPA. I like my DIPAs sweet, but this was ridiculous. The hops really didn’t show up until the last possible moment as I swallowed. And then they disappeared. Not a bad beer, just a really awful DIPA. Rather cloying. Hid alcohol incredibly well. Negative point for being a poor example of the style.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured slightly hazy, dark orangey amber with a small to average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left good to fair lacing. The aroma was light to moderate caramel malt; moderate resinous and orangey hops; maple syrup and slight rubbery notes. The initial flavor was very sweet, slightly bitter and a little acidic; while the finish was extremely sweet and bitter with a surprisingly short duration. There was caramel, maple syrup, brown sugar, orangey hops, oranges, honey, then resinous hops and slight rubbery notes. The medium body was a bit syrupy with fizzy carbonation and a lightly alcoholic and slightly metallic finish.

Nov 14, 2009 Pine forest nose puts a smile on your face and the quaffing adds to your pleasure. This bomber series from Clipper City is quite good. Starts with a mixed sweet malt showing caramel, maple syrup. Then on comes the citrus and pine hoppy points and ends with a very pleasant bitternes. Keep up the good work!

Nov 13, 2009 Bomber from Whole Foods (Tampa, FL). Pours a generally clear dark amber copper color with one finger white foamy head that settles slowly. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of citrus, pine, grapefruit, honey, light floral esters, fresh hops. Flavor is sweet and floral, syrupy with notes of caramel, toffee, citrus, grapefruit, pine, floral hop bite. Generally medium body with a pleasing hoppy finish.
