Mahogany colored beer, mostly clear, with only a trace of beige film for head. Aroma is a whack of alcohol preceding a mildly spiced yeastiness and warm apple pie. Pretty fruity stuff from front to back, the juicy malts are appropriately chewy. Unfortunate amount of alcohol persists throughout. Slightly slick on the palate with a quick effy tingle towards the end and retronasal alcohol heat. It does seem that beneath the mess on the surface, there’s a pretty decent abbey dubbel. Too bad they had to make this beer so Uber. probstk (1060), Nepean, Ontario, Canada

App.: Deep ruby-copper, clear, small off-white head.
Aroma: Really fruity – cherries and pears, raisins, and dried fruits; the (I guess) typical toasty, sweet malts and sugary molasses.
Palate: Medium-full body, medium carbonation, a little astringency.
Flav.: Much like the nose, more dark sugary fruits; somewhat sweet and a touch bitter.
Holy sheet, I like it! jerc (3947), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Alcoholic, sweet caramel aroma with note of brown sugar. Flavour is similar to aroma with more sweet sugary caramel, light fruity raisin notes. Smooth average to medium palate (3+). Solid example of the style with just a bit too much alcohol presence to reach the next level. TheShat (131), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 2, 2007 Pours rich copper color, and there is a small amount of lacing as I drink. Bold taste of oaky malt flavor with some caramel sweetness. The taste of alcohol is strong giving this beer a strong kick. This one has a lingering bitter finish. Another winner from Clipper City. mabel (2612), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Medium boozy grainy bread aroma with some malt and dark figgy fruit notes. Clear, dark red amber body with a medium-lasting light tan largely foamy head. Medium alcohol, grainy flavour, some dry grape or rum characteristics, and a sweet fruity aftertaste. Medium-full body. Takes awhile to get past the runaway rum. TheBeerOrg (1584), Kentucky, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | May 1, 2007 Pours dark burgundy with a mostly receding foamy light brown head. Aroma of phenolic, notes of cherry, toffee, and plum. Aroma becomes more medicinal as it warms. Taste is plum, toffee, sweet sticky malt, oak, and cherry. Still slightly medicinal. Mouthfeel is full to heavy bodied with a slick alcoholic feel. Something didn’t work out with this beer, it’s overly sweet and phenolic. johnadam2002 (529), Hainesport, New Jersey, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 1, 2007 Started off fruity but finished with a strong alcohol kick. Fruity aroma with malts in the background. Duster72 (117), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 29, 2007 Bottle labeled best by Aug 07. Pours a very dark amber with minimal head and no lacing. Aroma is sugars, alcohol, and yeast with some dark fruit hiding in the background. Taste is dominated by the yeast with dark fruits and malts. Mouthfeel is rather flat and cloying. A one bottle drinker. Not horrible, but not my favorite of the style. I would love to try this fresh on tap.
