Commercial Description:
Just released our newest seasonal – “Holy Sheet”. From the centuries-old tradition of Belgian Abbey monks comes our Uber Abbey Ale (9%). Aromatic and very full bodied, the beer will pour a deep burgundy in color and feature a rich, robust depth of malt character. Grab a line – Holy Sheet! – or you might be swept overboard.

This beer came in a 12 oz. bottle, and had a strangely illustrated cartoony label that put it firmly in the likeness of its other Heavy Seas siblings. The beer poured out brownish orange in color and lacked a good sized head. The layer of yeast mentioned on the neck label never got loose from its dwelling at the bottom of the sea and showed up in my goblet. The aroma was spicy, warm, and malty, but the lack of earthiness gave this away from being a true Belgian beer. The taste was fruity to brim with the rum soaked raisins, red cherries, and candied apples showing up on the tongue. Unfortunately the alcohol was bracing hot, and there was not enough complexity to mask it. If the yeast had been allowed to dry the mouthfeel some more, the beer would have turned out more charming. May be some age will accomplish this. As released, a bit too hot for my tastes.

12 oz bottle. Pour to a beautiful, bright, deep ruby color, with a thick, creamy, off white head, and a moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer is excellent, with lots of good sweet malty aroma, paired with plummy esters, and some spicy/earthy yeast. The palate is slighly slick on the tongue, with really good flavors of caramel, sweet malt, candi sugar, esters of plum and apple, and some funky/spicy yeast flavor. This beer finishes with good malt and fruity flavor up front, then ends with a funky/earth yeast flavor that lingers. Very well done domestic example of an abbey double. Nice beer to sip and relax with, and a good beer to match with hearty fare, or deserts. I really enjoyed this one. Another good effort from Clipper City.

Mild carbonation lifts slowly within a dark amber body while a thick cap of foamy gel holds above. Alcohol strikes first in the aroma and is slow to dissipate. Malts are mild and secondary while a variety of dark and citric fruits are tertiary. Flavor seems off with the motherlode of ABV lashing out against a malted sweetness and a yeasty/citric fruitiness (note: fruitiness... not bitterness). Mouthfeel is thick and a little sticky yet the finish is dry. I wanted to like this but it’s really a bit messy.

On tap at Mile Square in Hoboken. Tasty beer, dark and sweet just like you would expect. That being said, if i were going to drink a dubbel, i’d rather hit a Chimay Rouge.
